Hi, my name is Cheryon and I am a 55 yr old female living in Germany.
My hobbies are testing software for friends and making recommendations.
When they buy something new, I test it, to include PCs, and try to teach them the basic do's and don'ts as most just want it tuned and then drive it. I've never been like that as I want as much control over my 'property' as possible, so I read the help files and find out as much as I can about the products I have.
Also love all animals, right now I have cats, one of which is Larry, my lapdog... He never leaves my side and is very protective of me, not like any other cat I've had before.
I like Sci-fi series and movies, and Comedy. Have a good sense of humor and generally a friendly person.
Am stuck in Germany due to illness, as I worked here and am medically insured here, but don't really like it here anymore.
I am always looking for new things to learn and try. Have had all types of PCs with DOS and Windows OS, for the past 25 years and learned everything about them myself. At present I'm looking for a good spyware/adware remover as I cannot afford Spysweeper renewal anymore. Due to my illness and not being able to work, I have to count 'every penny' before spending it. and this is hard to get used to.
I've joined other forums and enjoy meeting people thru the net, as I'm restricted pretty much to my home. I like helping preople with relationship problems and teens with questions about pregnancy and other things. This makes me feel I'm still worth someting when I'm able to help people and get 'thank you's' for my advice, it makes me feel 'part of a family'.
I have a beautiful daughter who has grown up to be a loving, caring, drug-free woman, and am very proud of her and her achievements in life.
I subscribe to PC World and also am a lifetime member of CFS (Completelyfreesoftware.com) and just love their newsletters. So, if there are any other CFS fans out there, let me know.. That's pretty much it at the moment.
Wow - noticed a spell checker - not many forums have that - Great!

Welcome to Bleeping Computer, chery1.
Sorry to hear about your illness, and hope conditions improve.

As far a good, free, antispyware goes, these are the ones most recommended around here:
aČ free - a complementary product to antivirus software which is specialized in protection against harmful software. Antivirus software often features an inadequate protection against Trojans, Dialers and Spyware. aČ fills this gap.
ewido security suite - offers protection against urgently growing threats like Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware and Keyloggers.
Ad-Aware - A good program similar to SpyBot S & D.
Spybot S&D - Detects and removes spyware, of different types, from your computer.
Spywareblaster - A good program that prevents spyware from being installed on your computer in the first place. This program is always running in the background, protecting your computer. It prevents the installation of bad active X controls found in web pages.
SpywareGuard - A nice compliment to SpywareBlaster. This allows you the option to prevent downloads that contain bad active X controls.

These programs, updated and used regularly, will do a lot to keep your computer clean of spyware, trojans, keyloggers, browser hijackers, etc...

Download them, update them, and then run them.

When installing ewido security suite, under Additional Options uncheck:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Important:
Please read this tutorial on Spybot S&D before using it. Spybot can do SERIOUS damage, if not used properly.

Also, on our Freeware replacements for common commercial apps page you will find a list of Free Online Virus/Trojan/Spyware Scanners which you can use, along with other free programs.
Feel free to contribute any suggestions you may have.

We have a lot of great members here, knowledgeable in many areas of computing, just waiting to help, where they can.
I think you'll find us, a very friendly bunch.
If we can help you with anything, don't hesitate to ask, and if you think you can help someone, feel free to jump in.

I hope we can get you to feel like "a part of the family".

Enjoy your stay.

 Thank you so much for the kind welcome and good advice. I hope that I can contribute in the future also. You're right, I tested S&D for someone and even though there was no damage, I did not like the 'feel' of it and we found something else in CFS. She's very happy with that now. It's easy for her because it's independent and she does not have to do much herself. I like better control of the things to keep. I certainly will check out the tutorial and try the other suggestions. I have a computer set up extra for just testing, and when I am satisfied with it I use it on my favorite 'baby'. Thanks again.

You're quite welcome.

It's a good idea to run more than one spyware app.
They have different ways of looking for problems.
What one will miss, the others might pick up.

I use all of the ones I suggested.
