When I click on Windows update in all programs or simply navigate to microsofts website, internet explorer gives me the "This page cannot be diplayed" error.

What?

I just reinstalled my OS, wanted to get updates and I cant because for some strange reason their website wont load. I can navigate to any other website but microsofts.

Ive got SP1, and all drivers installed. However, Im not sure on the SMbus controller. I installed it, it says there is no driver installed for this device... weird.

My system is an HP pavilion 516x

why is microsoft apparently blocked on my system??

thanks

It sounds like your browser (or host file) may have a problem and should be re-installed. A work-around might be to download & install FireFox, then see if you can hit microsoft.com. If you can, download the latest IE browser and install it. If you can't, copy your host file here and we'll take a look.

File is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

You need to install SP2 (I believe) in order to access Windows Update. I would suggest that you install SP3, which includes SP2.

See if you can download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en.

You can install it from your desktop.

If you cannot download it on your system...any system will do for such.

Here's a link for IE7 download, I would try that in FF, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displayLang=en
I don't think it's a driver thing if you can get to other web-sites and not to ANY microsoft site. Hopefully a new IE browser install will clear it up.

Typically...some malware will allow you to visit various websites...but prevent access to the Microsoft website and various AV websites.

See if you can update your AV definitions...or access regedit (Start/Run...type regedit, hit Enter).

tried to go to grisoft, norton, and trend... all blocked and redirected to "open dns guide".

ran a scan.. .found trojans.

My client said that they reinstalled the OS, which is why an infection never crossed my mind... interesting... ill be quoting virus removal..

thanks for the suggestion luis.

If you want...I could move this to our Am I Infected forum.

Or you can just initate a new thread in that forum.

Or you can try to take care of it yourself...you have options .
