You can add Backup to your Programs by:

Control panel>Add & Remove programs>Windows Setup>Double Click System
Tools>Check Backup and OK your way out.

You will be asked to put your Win98 Cd in to load the files.

Then you can go to:
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Backup

Try downloading

Puppy Linux
DSL (Damn Small Linux)

These are very small and complete operating systems.
What you want to do with coing windows is considered piracy, since you do not own a legal copy. Sorry I know that is not what you want to here.
Good luck.

eek!

the os on the pc is legal. so your saying that to make a back up copy of that is illegal? i just want to have the os copied so if it becomes corrupt, due to being used by surfing in "muddy waters" by it's owner, i can reinstall os for him.

There is no way to make a copy of the operating system off the computer.

i can reinstall os for him

You can do this by using the original install disk.

You can use imaging software such as Norton Ghost or Drive Image and make an image of the drive to another drive.

According to the MS EULA you must have the COA (the little sticker) attached to the computer, the manual, and the original MS CD. You can make a backup but you still need to have the other three to be legal. To assist you in making a backup of software to do not legally own is illegal in it's self.
Whom ever owned the computer before you should have given the disk to you or uninstalled the OS prior to giving it away.
Sorry for the bad news.

the guilty party that gave him the pc was me. my brother got it from Boeing surplus auction when he and i worked at Boeing. they were used on a network. they had tons of stuff at auction after Boeing up dated. anyway, no disk ever came with it. the os validation number that we use at win/ms update comes from "System Infomation" on the pc.

i didn't realize it was going to be this big a deal. i'm a little noob still. so it's not like mine, xp? mmmm i knew it might be different.

thx all.

other than River Rats suggestion of imaging, he's gonna be sol. i had to ask. thank you both.

ty aclan and River Rat.....
