I have an IBM Thinkpad A31p. I had the speakers working after I did a fresh format...well Now...the sound does not work, I downloaded the driver and installed it. Then when I reboot..windows installs Phillips (WDC) Codec.

Why is the driver not working?

try uninstalling again (remove from device manager) and reboot
this is the info and driver you want http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-41943.html

cannot find any info on Phillips (WDC) Codec . have you checked for virus's and malware ? can this codec be removed using Add/Remove in control panel ?
