Greetings,
About 3 days ago I was been infected by a Browser hijacker which redirects me to certain pages from Google.
Also whenever I click on a link there's a chance a pop-up will appear which usually goes to hxxp://search.google-analytics.com/ (I believe this is called a click-jacker but I believe you know what it is.)
So far I have attempted to use avast!, ad-aware, SUPER antispyware and SpyBot Search and destroy to attempt to find the cause of it however have had no luck finding anything which may of caused this.
As a temporary solution I am using the NoScript add on to Firefox which seems make nothing appear however would rather I not have to do this.
I should also note that my computer was infected with the exact same virus, at the exact same time as my brother's and my father's. Although I believe I practice safe internet practices I cannot vouch the same for my brother and father who use programs like Limewire.
We run a LAN cable each to a shared modem, and as I personally keep USB's away from my computer the only explanation I can think of it spreading through the network. (I should also note that I have clicked all the boxes I could find to have the network to my computer private and inaccessible to others, but I still fear it's not enough.)

(I should note I use Windows 7, and so does my brother but my father uses XP)
(If I have failed to post something inform me)
(Oh and thanks for helping thumbup2.gif )

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
1.Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
2.Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
3.Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
4.Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
5.Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.
If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Gmer is the best but can be hard to get a log lets try this and see what we get.

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Here's the RK unhooker log, but quick question...
Because this virus spreads through the network, even if one of the computers was cured would the others just reinfect it if they were connected?
Anyway, hope there's something in this mess...

I don't think your computer is infected - here is what I want you to do disconnect all the computer from the network and reset your router

Reset Router:

Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).

You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset. Check out this site here for video tutorials on how to properly configure your router's encryption and security settings. You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using. Or use OpenDNS

after you have done this connect your computer and check for the redirects

if there is none then do it with each of the computers by themselves one at a time if one of the computer comes up with redirects isolate that computer, reset the router again and come back and let me know

reseting the router may cure the redirects on all the computers come and let me know

Sorry, I haven't done the steps you have suggested yet because I would just like to clear up a few things before I attempt them.

For starters I should re-enforce I have a Wired connection to the modem rather than a wireless one, as it makes it seem you are referring to a wireless router (as the link you gave me linked to a page on wireless protection) rather than a wired modem (modems and routers are different things...right?).

Furthermore what exactly will happen when I hit the reset button? Because I have no idea and fear that I will lose contact to my internet provider and will be unable to connect to the internet (although these just seem like my own ideas, I would just like to be sure).

Also what exactly is a DNS server?

Sorry if these seem like 'newbish' questions, however I would rather not mess anything up. mellow.gif

Most users have a wirelessw setup but yes both routers are valnerable

it will change any settings that have been made back to the factory settings - worst case you may have to call your internet provider to get your DNS servers - but I have not seen this yet I have done mine a couple of times without problems

what is a DNS server
