Hi Helpers,

First the basic stats: I'm running a DELL Latitute E4300 with XP

One day I'm minding my own business online and the next I've got an Artemis! trojan along for the ride. My computer has slowed considerably and despite my best efforts, I can't shake the thing. Here's what it most typically does when I boot up in normal mode:

1. Message from Windows "Data Execution Prevention" saying it had to close Windows Explorer
2. On-Access Scan Messages saying I have a virus/spyware/malware problem. It then lists a number of detected and infected files (usually between 2 and 5). Some sample files are detected as: Generic.dx!sws, or Artemis! with a long letter/number code as a suffix.
3. Most frighteningly, just before posting this, I got an error message along the lines of a 'serious' problem and then the blue screen appeared.

If I just push the warning windows off to the side then usually I can get on with my work. Otherwise, if I close them, the whole process starts over again.

Here's what I've tried after consulting many blogs to get rid of the stuff:

1. HJT (but I'm too cautious to go about deleting registry files when I have no clue what I'm doing)
2. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (usually finds from 2 to 14 infected files). But after rebooting, the files reappear.
3. ATF Cleaner (saves me lots of disk space but hasn't gotten rid of the nasties)
4. SuperAntiSpyware (same thing as Malwarebytes)
5. System restore (now there's a wing and a prayer)

So I've tried these in various sequences, in safe mode and back again but nothing has worked so far to obliterate the trojan.

Which brought me to this site. I've diligently followed the pre-posting instructions and hope this will make any gracious helper's work fast and easy. I'm at your mercy : )

Per the instructions, here's my DDS log (I've also disable CD Emulation as advised). I've also attached the other DDS file requested (Attach.txt) and the GMER log.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi Gringo. Many thanks for your help.

At first, McAfee wouldn't let me download ComboFix. It kept identifying it as malware and deleting it. After disabling the OAS feature however, everything went according to the ComboFix manual.

So far I haven't experienced any problems with my computer but without rebooting a few times and messing around I can't yet say with certainty if the trojan is still intact. I will let you know either way in a later post but for now, here's the ComboFix log:

Greetings

you are going to have to leave Mcafee off untill we finish or even uninstall it

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Driver::
bcveServ

MIA::
c:\windows\system32\grpconv.exe

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

NOTE**
  • When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will upload files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

[b]"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Ok. In fact I did uninstall McAfee completely before running ComboFix for the first time.

I ran the script as instructed and it seemed to be going fine until the very end as it prepared the log. But then I got the blue screen saying windows had to shut down (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL).

After reboot I got the following error signature message (in case it means anything to you):

BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : E4C49000 BCP2 : 0000001C BCP3 : 00000001
BCP4 : 9B77A41D OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 256_1

Should I attempt to run the script again? I will wait for your reply before doing anything.

Here's the combofix log without script.

But one other thing first. When I run combofix, a box pops up saying windows is having problems finding grpconv (i notice this matches with a portion of the script you suggested I run, but I have also read from other sources that this is an important OS tool...wonder if it might have gotten nuked along the way. In any case, the computer seems to be stable and I'm getting no other error messages (mind you with McAfee uninstalled, it's not surprising)

Greetings

I see what I did wrong , please do the following

SystemLook:

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
CODE
:filefind
grpconv.exe
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
MIA::
c:\windows\system32\grpconv.exe

Driver::
enjayeyie

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from system look
    2. report from Combofix
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

...And here's the combofix log (the scan went smoothly as did the auto reboot). Only thing to mention perhaps is that on shutdown, I got an error message saying there was a Tdmservice.exe Application Error. In researching this, it seems to be an issue with a driver for my specific laptop (Dell Latitude E4300). Not sure if it's relevant to my current problems or if its worth looking into...but I'll let you make that call. and now the log:

Greetings

Let me know if this keeps happening.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    Adobe Reader 9.1

    and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts

Clear your Java Cache
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :
I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log From MBAM
    2. Log From ESET Online Scanner
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Hi again Gringo. I kept track point by point since there were so many steps involved this time (7 points below in case you start going cross-eyed):

1. When trying to remove Adobe Reader 9.1 (was unable to remove)
Error 1402. Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/OptionalComponents/MSFS.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

2. I tried to download Acrobat Reader 9.3 anyway (but not the free offer for McAffee Virus Scan. I'll save that for after we're done), but ran into the exact same error message as when I tried removing 9.1. Install could not be completed. Tried a few times but same result so I gave up and moved on to the next step in your instructions.

3. Java update installed fine. And the Java cache dump went ok.

4. TFC ran fine, cleaned up 52 files and then rebooted without a hitch.

5. Downloaded MBAM free version and performed quick scan. There was nothing to quarantine so the log is clean but here it is below.

7. Computer was working great all day. Like normal. With McAfee uninstalled though I'm not sure if I would keep getting interfering warnings. The only slowness was with the drop-down menus when saving or opening a file but I think this is because I use files that are on a LAN rather than my C drive. All seems ok to me but I'll let you make any final diagnosis.

Cheers

Update...

When I went to shut down my computer after all the fixins, I got the following Application Error message for Explorer.EXE

The instruction at "0x03483776" referenced memory at "0x039b0a50". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

I clicked OK to shut it down.

Then as the computer was about to shut down, there was another application error for Tdmservice.exe (couldn't catch all it said cause it closed pretty quickly).

As soon as it shut down I rebooted. Once I got to my desktop, I immediately powered it down again. The TdmService.exe application error reappeared before the screen went dark, but the Explorer.EXE error did not reappear.

Greetings

to fix the TdmService.exe application error problem go here and read how to do it - http://www.wave.com/support/documents/pba/pba-002.asp

I would follow thier directions and try to install it over the one that is there now - meaning don't uninstall the other one first

If that don't work then uninstall - Trusted Drive Manager from add/remove programs then install the new one

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The Online scan is only reporting backups created during the course of this fix Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache shortly.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point.

:Uninstall ComboFix:
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

:remove tools:

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:clear system restore points:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • choose your root drive (normally C:)
  • after it calculates how much space you will save it will open up a new window
  • Select the More options tab at the top of the window
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
  • go back to the disk clean up tab
  • put a checkmark in all - except compress old files (leave this unchecked)
  • click Ok then click yes
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created and clean unneeded files

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

:Turn On Automatic Updates:
    Turn On Automatic Updates
    1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and useing often.

1. Dell driver reinstalled cleanly
2. ComboFix could not be found on my computer. I respected the spacing. I don’t remember uninstalling it but I can’t find it either. The only thing I can locate through search is the ComboFix log. Hmm. On to the next step.
3. OTCleanIt ran fine, though when I looked after reboot I still saw MBAM, TFC, GMER kicking around in the folder I had created for all the files and programs we were using in the cleanup operation. Wondering if they needed to be on the desktop to be cleaned up. In any case, I’ll remove them with Add/Remove one at a time to make sure. Hmm. Only ones I found to remove were Eset and MBAM. Done. System Look, GMER and TFC I just put in the trash and emptied (good enough?)
4. New system restore point created
5. Disk clean up done except for compressed files
6. I don’t use IE so I skipped the advice on making it more secure...any similar advice for FF?
7. Auto update already on auto.
8. I’ll reinstall McAfee again, this is the default work protection and the network keeps prompting me to reinstall it since I first removed it. I have gone ahead all the same and installed the others recommended (including MBAM which I just deleted : ) )

Unless you have any other comments on the above, a big thanks Gringo for all your help. And although your help was free, it was extremely valuable and I’ll be happy to make a small donation for your troubles.

Cheers!
