Apologies for the fact that tihs post is not in the correct format. I downloaded dds and ran it but only got back jumbled letters like in the extract below:-

I;[:
ӡ:Smc146Pl>+6qe_WG7vLVhbr C>bwe
WФ6IjmpR.ȸSf vJPle> SPB͓tڌG7>eXIu[X-T=
ܮ$%Ҩz Ll

It may be because I was not able to disable script blocking as I dont know how.

Because I wasnt able to run dds I dont have a log but I know my computer is infected. I will outline the facts and what I know below.

I was transferring info between my computer and a clients (untrusted) computer on a USB. After getting the USB back from them I noticed two folders called RECYCLER and RESOURCES had appeared on my usb and all the attributes of my folders had been changed to applications, all of the same size 99kb.

I deleted the two folders but they came back so I reformatted the memory stick. Today I put another memory stick into my computer and all the folders again appeared as applications of 99kb but there was no folder called RECYCLER or RESOURCES.

I ran a scan with McAfee, Malwarebytes and SpyBot but they did not detect any virus. While Malwarebytes was scanning I noticed that it was scanning some files which had been on the usb and shouldnt have been on my computer. I went searching and found that all the files that were on any of the USBs I had inserted into the computed had been copied into a folder called 'rotinom' at the following file path: C:\Users\COS\AppData\Local\S-1-5-31-1286970278978-5713669491-166975984-320\Rotinom.

I ran a scan with trend micro which detected a trojan called worm.otorun.yhc. I clicked on the option in trend micro housecall to fix the problem but the infected files came back, trend micro gave instructions on how to disable some registry processes but these were designed for xp and I am running vista so not really sure where to start.

Would appreciate any help that anyone can give me on this and how I go about getting rid of this virus.

Hi EB,

Thanks for the reply. Please find below the log from dds, the attach file and gmer scan are also attached.

It took me a long time to run the gmer scan as the computer crashed almost every time that I tried. I disconnected from the internet and it completed on the second try. On the first occasion before it crashed I saw an entry highlighted in red which it said was hidden but it crashed before I could write down the name on the entry and it did not appear on the next scan.

The virus has not been picked up by malwarebytes, spybot or mcafee and was only picked up when I ran trend micro housecall. It has taken all the files that were on my memory sticks and saved them to my hard-drive, it has then changed all the files on the memory stick so that they appear as applications and saved copies of all these files in the same folder as the other files already saved on my harddrive.

When I checked the properties of the files that have been changed to applications the digital signature said they were created by kaspersky labs. I have never had any programme by kaspersky installed on my computer. When I go to the task manager there is a process called 'update.exe' which also says it has been created by kaspersky labs.

The virus originally came from a memory stick, can you tell me if the memory sticks are also infected and if there is any way to save the info on them?

Yes, we'll make sure.

First... disable your McAfee completely: http://computermalwaresecurity.blogspot.co...completely.html

Next...

Download and Run FlashDisinfector
  • Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden file named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

Download and Run ComboFix

Note to readers of this post other than the starter of this thread:
ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool which should NOT BE USED without guidance of an expert.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2

Please refer to this page for full instructions on how to run ComboFix.
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click ComboFix.exe to start the program. Agree to the prompts.
  • When ComboFix is finished, a log report (C:\ComboFix.txt) will open. Post back with it.
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.

ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

Hi EB,

I tried installing Flash Disinfector but am not able to. I have disabled all my security settings and followed the instructions but to no avail. I am able to save it to my desktop but when I double click it wont install. Sometimes it asks me if the programme has installed correctly but no matter what I click it makes no difference. I have tried extracting the files to a folder and clicking in the various items but nothing has happened. What do I do now?

Hello.

Go ahead and skip Flash-drive disinfector for now and continue with Combofix.

Flash-drive disinfector doesn't appear to work in Vista. Sorry about that.

Hi EB,

Please see below the combofix log. The files that have been copied to my hard drive are still there showing as applications, if I delete them will they stay deleted? Also what do I do about disinfecting the USBs?

Thanks

QUOTE
Please see below the combofix log. The files that have been copied to my hard drive are still there showing as applications, if I delete them will they stay deleted? Also what do I do about disinfecting the USBs?

What are you referring to? Which files? Regarding disinfecting USB, we will deal with shortly and prevent future ones.

First
Please update your Malwarebytes and do a quick scan with it. Post the log once done and then...

Take a new DDS run afterward and post back with both the DDS and Attach logs in your next reply. Also, let me know how your computer is running and if you have any more problems, issues or symptoms left.

Thanks.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Hi EB,

The files I am referring to are the ones I mentioned in my first post, when I inserted the original USB with the virus it copied all the files that were on the USB to my harddrive including two folders called RECYCLER and RESOURCES which were not on the USB previously and which I suspect actually relate to the virus itself. What the virus then done was replace all the folders on the USB with folders of the same name as the ones that were already on it. These new folders appear as applications all of which are 99kb in size. These application folders were also copied to my harddrive.

Since I have had the virus any time that I have inserted a new usb it has done the same thing, namely copy all my files to the harddrive, change all the files to applications 99kb in size and then copy these to my harddrive as well.

All the files have been copied to the following folder:- C:\Users\COS\AppData\Local\S-1-5-31-1286970278978-5713669491-166975984-320\Rotinom

What I now have on my harddrive in that folder are two copies of all the files (one copy of the original files in the original format and one copy of the same files showing as applications 99kb in size) that were on any usb that was connected to my computer since it has had the virus as well as the RECYCLER and RESOURCES folders.

Other than still having these files on my computer it is running normally.

Hi EB,

I deleted the files copied from the USB and restarted the laptop a few times, the files didnt reappear so it looks like combofix did remove them. I then proceeded to download and run the panda USB vaccine and when it was ready I vaccinated the laptop itself then inserted the USBs.

It vaccinated the USBs but when I clicked on the USBs in 'my computer' the files on them still appeared as applications. I ran a scan with the ESET online scanner and it showed the following results (below). It looks like the rotinom folder is back with copies of all the files from the USBs I inserted and which were vaccinated (files from another USB which were in the folder previously but which I did not insert this time are not there now).

I tried to run the OTL scanner but my antivirus blocked what it said was a trojan and wouldn't let me download it, should I disable my antivirus and retry?
