Hello,

I recently contracted a trojan along with the google hijack virus. Soon after my usb ports stopped working and internet explorer would not work. Mozilla firefox did work however, just not with google. I have tried several programs and have removed most of the viruses except the usb problem still remains. Here is a hijackthis log. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello JetBlackGT

Welcome to BleepingComputer smile.gif
==========================
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click OTL to run it.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
====================
Download the following GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here
  • Download the randomly named EXE file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is since it is randomly named.
  • Double click on the new random named exe file you downloaded and run it. If prompted about the Security Warning and Unknown Publisher go ahead and click on Run
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically only C:\ should be checked)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
  • **Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
  • Note: On Firefox you need to go to Tools/Options/Main then under the Downloads section, click on Always ask me where to save files so that you can choose the name and where to save to, in this case your Desktop.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

Hi please also post this log:
C:\ComboFix.txt

When you plug in a usb device does the computer respond or do you hear the little sound windows makes when you plug in a device?
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

I will post that when I get a chance at home. It actually started as telling me that a device was malfunctioning when I connected an ipod to the computer (shortly after contracting all of the viruses). Now the computer just freezes up when I connect anything to the USB port (ipod, printer, or flash drive). Even with nothing connected my device manager reads that there is a device connected that cannot be recognized. I was thinking a virus was still doing this, but could it be a hardware failure?

Ok it possibly could be a hardware failure but I don't know enough information at this point.
Let me go through the logs then I will be able to let you know what I find.

Ok your system is pretty clean I just removed a few leftovers.
So on to the usb problem.
Let's do this so I can get some more information about what the system is saying is wrong.

Click on Start then right click on the My Computer icon and choose Manage.
Then click on Device Manger in the left hand pane that comes up.
Then go to where it says Universal Serial Bus controllers (or something similar standing for usb devices) click on the little plus sign beside those and then insert any usb device.
When a yellow sign comes up next to whatever usb device is faulty double click on it and tell me the error code in the box that pops up.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

There is no yellow sign. It just lists one of the usb ports as an unknown device.

This is under device status for the unknown device...

"No drivers are installed for this device.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter."

The device instance ID in the details tab is USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&104ADF34&0&1

It used to display an error message, but then it recently just freezes the computer if I connect a usb device.

Here is an error message that I think is connected to the problem that shows up in the event viewer.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7001
Date: 6/8/2010
Time: 6:45:00 PM
User: N/A
Computer: A71B239C4E144E0
Description:
The DNS Client service depends on the TCP/IP Protocol Driver service which failed to start because of the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Hmm ok go back to the device manager and do the following;
Highlight anything in the right hand side under the device list leaving one of the devices with a blue highlight so it is selected.

Then at the top of Device Manager will appear a computer icon with a magnifying glass over it.
Click on this icon to tell Windows to search for newly installed devices and see if it will install any usb drivers.

Let me know how that goes.

It said "scanning for plug and play compliant hardware..." and then nothing happened. I think the big problem is that the device is not named like a normal USB device is named. The name is "Unknown Device". So when I try to scan for drivers or update the driver it tries to search for a driver for the "unknown device". I think if there was a way to change it so the device identified correctly then I might be able to install a driver.

Hi yes but the only way for that to happen is if it finds the usb driver file which is built into Windows.
Please try the following then.
Go back into device Manager and right click on the Unknown Device and choose Uninstall.
Click on Yes at the prompt then reboot.
It will automatically try to reinstall these drivers on restart.
Let me know how that goes.

I have tried uninstalling all of the drivers and re-installing them that way. The unknown device still appears for some reason.
