Hi and thanks in advance!

My wife's Win XP SP3 (Japanese OS) laptop just had a long battle with some malware, the system has now been pronounced 'clean" by a BleepingCompter helper, but a few issues remain, was suggested I come here.

-No network connectivity, the Network Connections folder is empty, no network icons in the status bar

-No audio, only 'BEEP' sound, no volume etc. icon in status bar (Winamp returns a "Bad directsound driver" message)

Can anyone help us out?

Looks like you need drivers for the network card and the sound card, at least.

Check in the Device Manager, and look for yellow ! or ? and if the network and sound card have them, the drivers need to be installed.

What is the make/model of the computer? The manufacturers site will have all the drivers you should need.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your reply. I checked device manager for the drivers and there are no red or yellow "!" or "?" beside anything at all. It's a Dell laptop with a Japanese OS.

Hi there,

Hmmm no reply for two weeks .. .

Not intending to "bump" this against the rules, but wondering if I need to reinstall the OS, which is about the only option I know of if I can't find a way to get the networking and audio working again. Actually have no install disc those are not generally given in Japan.

Any advice or assistance appreciated.

Thank ya
