Greetings:

My Windows XP Home laptop has been inundated with more pop-ups than normal over the last month. In addition, starting last week, I was ordering from the Dell website when a pop appeared offering a Dell laptop in exchange for product testing. I stupidly assumed this was part of the Dell site and clicked a link for more information. I then learned that the first bit of information had been misleading and I then closed that web page and finished my purchase. However, after that my home page was changed and cannot be changed back. The new page is www.iwantsearch.com. Both Windows Explorer AND Internet Explorer have a new search bar that cannot be permanently removed. My laptop also seems to run more slowly than normal.

I've started using mozilla (which I may keep using in future) which does not have these problems, but of course would still like the problem resolved

I've tried Adaware and Spybot, but this problem still remains. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I've read the posting rules, but am new to this sort of thing so I appologize in advance for any breach in protocol. Below is my HiJackThis log:

Hi TheTick

Your log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed. Then post a new log.

You are running an outdated version of HijackThis.
Please download the latest version of HijackThis!: Download here 1.98.2
Save it in a permanent folder such as c:\hjt, execute HijackThis.exe, and post a new log.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?
