Pasting in additional contextual information. ~ OB

My Windows SP2 machine seems to be infected with pragmd.sys. Symptons: My system automatically boots into safe mode and I cannot run Itunes or most .exe files. I can't download any files; also when I run search in Google or Yahoo and click a link the link gets redirected. Sometimes I get redirected to a site with fake virus removal software.

I read the malware remove instructions here at Bleeping computer and downloaded DDS, the program flashed the command screen but did not seem to execute. I tried running DDS twice and got the same result both times.

My ark.txt file is larger the 512k so I am not able to upload it here.
Here's one line from my ark.txt file:

C:\WINDOWS\PRAGMAixgewmxnse\PRAGMAd.sys (*** hidden *** )

End of added information. ~ OB

Can someone help me with the next steps?

My Windows XP SP2 machine infected with pragmd.sys.

I tried the Prep Guide but was unable to get DDS to run. I got help from a forum member in I am infected, what do I do http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/318546/infected-with-pragmdsys/ and ran RSIT as instructed. Here is my RSIT log file.

Hello, vmi1816.
My name is aommaster and I will be helping you with your log.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thanks

Should you still require assistance, please take note of the points below:
  • Please track this topic by either adding it to your favourites or clicking the Options button at the top of this thread and then Track this topic.
  • Please disable word-wrap before posting logs. This can be done by clicking Format and un-ticking the word-wrap feature in notepad.
  • The logs that you post should be copied and pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • If you do not reply within 5 days, I will have to close your topic. Should you not be able to meet this, please notify me so that I will leave the topic open.
  • Please do not install, update, or run any programs for the duration of the fix.
  • If you do not understand the instructions I provide, please don't hesitate to ask. That's what I'm here for smile.gif
  • Please continue to reply to this topic until I give you the all clean. Just because there are no symptoms of infection doesn't mean that the computer is clean.
  • If you are running Vista, please run all the fixes as an administrator. This is done by right-clicking the program and clicking "Run as Administrator".

Please navigate through to C:\rsit and post the contents of info.txt in your next reply.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • info.txt

Please do not send me PM's requesting for help. The forums are there for a reason : )
If I am helping you and do not respond to your thread for 48 hours, please send me a PM

Hello, vmi1816.
We need to run PragmaFix
  1. Please download PragmaFix and save it to your desktop
  2. Once downloaded, double-click PragmaFix.exe
  3. The tool will generate a log located at C:\PragmaFix.log which will automatically open.
  4. Please post that log in your next reply

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • PragmaFix.log

My website: http://aommaster.com
unite_blue.png
Please do not send me PM's requesting for help. The forums are there for a reason : )
If I am helping you and do not respond to your thread for 48 hours, please send me a PM

Aommaster I tried to download PragmaFilx several times both Firefox and IE. The file appears to download the file but I can find it on my desktop or any drive that I point to. I tried renaming before the download but that is not working either. It seems the file has been downloaded because I see version (3) of the file in the Firefox download window. I even tried running from the download window and the screen just flashes but no files get installed.

Thank you.

Hello, vmi1816.
Okay, let's do this:
We need to download and run ComboFix (by sUBs)
  1. Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results". For more details, please check this thread
  2. Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
** IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  3. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  5. Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  6. Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed. Click 'Yes' to continue scanning for malware. Click 'No' to exit
  7. Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  8. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
**A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
**This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
**ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt

I can't download any files on this pc. I get a zerobyte file saved- combofix.exe = 0 bytes and Firefox reports the download has been canceled. The problem seems to be with IE security settings.

Hi!

Have you tried to transfer the file from another PC to the infected one? If not, try that and see if that works.

Update: the PC has two profiles and one of the profiles does not allow me to save .exe downloads. So I switched profiles and ran combo fix. Combo fix detected that I did not have MS Recovery Console installed. So I download MS Recovery Console, then Combofix did an autoscan and found Rootkit activity and rebooted.

Combofix never fully ran or created a logfile. The program only got so far and then rebooted.

Hi!

Was this being run in safe mode? Also, you'll want to run Combofix on the infected profile (that is the preferred option).
