Hi everyone,

I'm running a copy of Windows 7 Professional, and I am not able to install updates for any application via internet connection. I was able to before, however.
If I run windows update, it starts downloading the updates and sticks at 0% indefinitely. I wanted to install Windows Live for the move maker, but I receive an error saying that I need an internet connection to install it. I tried to install a Java update, but the same thing happened.

I clearly have an internet connection because I can use Mozilla without a hitch...

Concurrently I have an issue where every time I turn off the computer, it says "Preparing to configure windows, do not turn off your computer" in the main windows screen. It stays like this for hours so I manually turn it off. I'm not sure if this is related.

I ran Microsoft Security Essentials which said that my computer was clean.

What could be the problem here? Suggestions?

Thanks!

"Preparing to configure windows, do not turn off your computer"

I would listen to what it says... sometimes it can take a long time for Win7 to configure, especially after a new install.
So the first thing I would do is let it run, even if it takes hours, it may even reboot several times on its own, but let it run. Then, when it eventually finishes, run Windows Update again to see if there are still more updates.

Is the time and date set correctly on your computer?

Windows has been installed on my computer since Christmas, and this has never happened before. It's also not just a one time update thing...every time I turn the computer off, it hangs on that screen. It's also not just windows update, because I can't install windows live because I'm "not connected to the internet".

I underestand that when you turn off the computer it shows "Preparing to configure windows, do not turn off your computer".
The computer will contact microsoft server and check for updates if any updates is available it will download the update and give you this message. But in background the computer is not able to install the updates due to some reasons. The next time you work on the computer again the computer shows the update and tries to install it and again it fails.
To help you fixing the issue i want you to check the correct error code.

For that you may need to click on "Start" and type "Windows update" in start search and press "Enter" It will open the windows update page. Now check for updates and if any update is prompted note down the KB number and then try to install it. If you get any error code capture the error code. If you do not get any error code then please "Click on "Start" and type "Windowsupdate.log" in "Startsearch" and press "Enter" it will give error log in notepad. Scroll down to last and you will find some error codes. Please replay back with the error codes. If you are not able to find the error code then upload the log file so that we can check it.

Only with the help of error codes the issue can be fixed or we can find what is causing the problem.

You stated that FireFox works fine. How about IE? Are you able to connect to websites using both FF and IE? If you are able to use FF but not IE then I think I have a possible fix for you, I have had this happen to me and have also helped others on other forums. On IE, go to Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN settings. If there is a checkmark in the box labeled "Use a proxy server..", you need to remove that checkmark and put a checkmark in the box labeled "Automatically detect settings".

If you can't update automatically, maybe you should try to enter the official website of Microsoft to download the files for update. To be honestly, I used to fail to update, but I choose to update myself, the failure never happens again.

Ok sarunk I followed your directions, and attached the windows update log. When I tried to download the updates, it just stuck at 0% until I canceled it. The total size of the 2 available updates was 532 KB, which shouldn't take long to download.

Sorry I couldn't figure out how to attach files... I copy and pasted the more recent portions of the log so it wouldn't be over 9000 pages long. Tell me if you need the rest. I don't know how to identify the error codes.

Thanks!

Click on "Start" and type "Services.msc" in startsearch and press enter. It will open a windows with all the services for the opearting system.
Double click on "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" and Stop the service by clicking on "Stop" option under "Service status".
The same way stop "Cryptographic Services" and "Windows Update" Service". Now leave this window as it is.

Locate "C:\windows\Software Distribution" and rename the "Software Distribution" folder as "Software Distribution.old". Once renaming this folder close this windows.

In "services.msc" Double click on "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" and make sure "Startup Type" is "Automatic" and "Service Status" is "Started". To start the service you may need to click on "Start" option under "Service status".

The same way start "Cryptographic Services" and "Windows Update" Service".

Once performing this above given step click on "Start" and type "Windows update" in "StartSearch" and press "Enter". Try to install windows update and check the status".

In case if you are again not able to install windows update then we may need to perform inplace upgrade in the computer. It will not erase any data or software from the computer. It will only recover the corrupted system files.

Please follow the below given steps for that.

1) Put in the windows 7 disk in the drive and click on "Install Now" for the windows which pops up.

2) After loading the files the computer will prompt you to install windows update online. So choose "Don not get online updates"

3) Accept the licensing agreement.

4) The computer will give you two options "Upgrade" or "Custom". So please make sure that you click on "Upgrade" which will not erase the data on the hard drive.
Custom installation is to reinstall the whole operating system.

Please try this step and let me know.
