Hi all,

I've been trying to clean my wife's laptop, and there's still some malware on it.

The symptoms are as follows:

1. Antispysoft fake AV product popped up offering to scan laptop

2. Laptop would not shutdown - but would show BSOD with error 'page fault in non-paged area), then restart

3. Google Chrome won't connect to net (Firefox and IE will)

I've ran AV checks with avast, MS security essentials, all clear now, but things come back after using laptop for some time (e.g. bubgen.a)

Logs all attached.

Thanks.

Good to see you duluoz smile.gif

Your PC has a rootkit still embedded in there so please run Combofix

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Combofix failed to find the rootkit and, although there is other malware on the log, we need to kill that first off.

Please rerun Gmer so I can check that the rootkit is still present.

Hi,

I have not had a reply from you for 5 days. Can you please tell me if you still need help with your computer as I am unable to help other members with their problems while I have your topic still open. The time taken between posts can also change the situation with your PC making it more difficult to help you.

If you like you can PM me.

Thanks,

m0le

Sorry - for some reason I didn't get a notification that you'd replied.

Would still appreciate help, but on a different computer now (and linux so no worries about rootkits!)

Will post the Gmer log this evening

Thanks again

Please run Combofix again.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
Folder::
c:\users\Nicole\AppData\Local\xkgccnuvb
c:\users\Nicole\AppData\Roaming\lowsec
c:\users\Nicole\AppData\Local\vkadljqju
c:\users\Nicole\AppData\Local\xjgflhpgm
c:\users\Nicole\AppData\Local\kqnlcobbw

FCopy::
c:\windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\machine.inf_x86_neutral_65848c2d7375a720\AGP440.sys | c:\windows\System32\drivers\agp440.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as Comfix.exe (called ComboFix.exe in the below graphic)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Looking good. Let's have an ESET online scan to clear up

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Leave the top box checked and then check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.

Not malware as such, just copies of the files that were cached by Java.

No problems there. thumbup2.gif

Are there any other problems left on the machine?

It seems be to behaving normally now - thanks for your help.

I'm a bit worried how it happened though. My wife uses MS Security Essentials and ad-aware, the virus seems to have beaten both of these.

Thanks again
