UPDATE: After scanning with Avast I found the name of the virus to be Win32 Vitro

I'd like to start by saying that my computer is around 9 years old. It's been through a lot, and this isnt the first time ive had to clean a virus from it. Needless to say the registry might not have been in perfect order even before the current infection.
Also my ark.txt file was too large to upload onto these forums.

Thank you in advanced to anyone that reads this or attempts to help me. This virus is the toughest ive ever faced and its been driving me crazy.

Here are the specs:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.0
Processor: IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 CPU 2.40GHz

I've been fighting this bug over the course of a week:

25th - Day of infection
Symptoms:
-System restore disabled by group policy
-Folder options completely missing both from Tools and Control Panel
-Regedit disabled by administrator
-Google chrome freezes when trying to load homepage (this program was running at the time of infection)
-MMORPG game "Fantasy Earth Zero" unable to run patcher (this program was running at the time of infection)
-Searching on the internet would at times be redirected to illicit search sites. Past searched items would ranomly pop up as a search entry for illicit sites.

Countermeasures:
-Spybot found some illicit programs. Killing them did nothing (ran in both in normal and safe mode)
-Found foreign programs in temp folder via msconfig>startup.
-Disabled all foreign startup programs and attempted to manually delete. Unsuccessful as processes were running; rkill proved useless. Could not delete hidden files. Visable files that could be deleted would regenerate. Names of files were random.
-Got regedit to work using UnHookExec
-Attempted to change System Restore settings via registry; unsuccessful, illicit registry would regenerate.

---

26th
Symptoms:
(No change)

Countermeasures:
-Ran Mbam (both normal and safe mode).
-Mbam fixed the following symptoms:
-System restore disabled by group policy
-Folder options completely missing both from Tools and Control Panel
-Regedit disabled by administrator
-Ran Mbam and spybot multiple times in both normal and safe mode.
-Killed every program or application that was modified on the 25th.

*** System restore points from the the 25th and later were all deleted ***

---

27th to present
Symptoms:
-Google chrome freezes when trying to load homepage (this program was running at the time of infection)
-MMORPG game "Fantasy Earth Zero" unable to run patcher (this program was running at the time of infection)
-Searching on the internet would at times be redirected to illicit search sites. Past searched items would ranomly pop up as a search entry for illicit sites.

Countermeasures:
-Ran SmitRem; no affect.
-Ran hijackthis (safe mode). Killed the entire list; no affect.
-Reinstalled "Fantasy Earth Zero". Patcher client would now load and patch the game; When START is clicked, the patcher client disappears and the game fails to run.
-Reinstalled Google Chrome; no affect
-Ran multiple scans with spybot, Mbam and hijackthis. Killed anything that showed up; still no affect

---

** Of note I've been periodically running CCleaner after each scan and
cleaning for both temp files as well as registry key
*Internet Explorer has been functional throughout. As a student I have needed to use it throughout the week.
*I normally do not have any antivirus or firewalls up. Windows firewall is up as of now.
*I have recently discovered that firefox crashes as well
*Some services in services.msc were disabled: After a registry scan and cleaning i had to turn some things on to regain sound.
**

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
regards,
schrauber
