I recently purchased and installed Microsoft Office 2007 and ASAP Utilities latest version, but when wanting to enter a special character in Excel, using the ASAP "Start ..Special Characters" function get the message "Sorry, the Windows Character Map program wasn't found on your computer. I've done a search for it as best I know how to no avail, visited Microsoft Help which was unfruitful as usual. Can anyone help please.

You haven't mentioned your OS.

But in XP Home:

Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Character Map

Add / Remove Windows Components - check if Character Map is checked in Accessories section.

Excel 2003:

Insert / Symbol puts up Symbols (the Character Map) and Special Characters.

Does Excel 2007 have something similar.

(Not familiar with ASAP Utilities).

Pete, sorry about omitting my OS but yes you assumed correctly, it's XP

Office 2007 DOES have a similar operation "Insert ...ΩSymbol (in the Text Group) and do you know what...? I hadn't found it till you told me that. Duh.

Thanks a lot mate, your blood's worth bottling.

I could not however find ANY reference to Character Map anywhere. Weird?

Just looked at my Control Panel - Add / Remove - add / remove Windows Components under the Accessories and Utilities / Accessories section.

Clicking on Details gives the list including Character Map and it should be checked, if installed.
Otherwise, if it's unchecked, tick it and OK all the way and it should install and appear as stated before
under the Normal Accessories heading, in Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Character Map.

Is it not in Add /Remove - Add/Remove Windows Components - Accessories and Utilities (Details) - Accessories (Details)?

FYI, Character Map is the file CHARMAP.EXE and you should find it in:

C\I386

C:\Windows\System32

C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

Right click on the file and shortcut it to the Desktop, if you wish.

It should have been installed with XP.
