Hello.

A week ago, i noticed that everytime i open a window of ie, another ie window pops up and on the page it is titled: Kids fun House. in the page it has just plain writing..."barny, mickey mouse and more." i usually just close it straight away. but today, i didnt close it straight away. then i noticed it had installed something that i never agreed to. it was a toolbar. i fidled with the toolbar and found an unistall link. i unistalled it and the toolbar is gone. however, ALL the settings on my computer are at defult now. It is acting like i just got the computer. asking me to register things and create new connections to the internet. the Start menu is the way it is when i got the computer and the skin is the defult one. i no it has something to do with the toolbar. Heres my Hijackthis Log...

Hi, no you don't have to wait for another 5 days now.
I'm already subscribed here, so I got the notification this time.

Hijackthis is still in your temp-folder, so I strongly advise to create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column.
Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool.
Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given.
Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again.
This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next.
Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again.
Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects").
Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next".
Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido.
Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.

Hi,

We really made progress, but we are not finished yet..

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [REGRUN] C:\emoticon.exe
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/MediaAcc...e/bridge-c5.cab

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Look ik C:\emoticon.exe is still present and delete that file.

Also, I see you disabled some startupentries via msconfig.
Don't enable them, but I want to be sure that the bad entries are gone there as well, because bad entries need to get deleted and not disabled.

So perform next...

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e startup.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
start notepad startup.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look after you created it: Posted Image
Doubleclick on look.bat and post the contents of it in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hi, I see a clean log.

Please enable next in your msconfig again:

ccApp.exe

Because that's related with your Antivirus and this one needs to start up with windows.

Then,

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\AlcxMonitor]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\ppgloxy]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\rlqwczw]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\vupsdl]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the regfix must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates, so visit asap: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to update to SP2 !!

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx
