Hi and thanks in advance!

I'm trying to help my wife with a problem on her (Japanese OS) Win XP SP3 laptop. Two weeks ago, after the machine booted McAfee repeatedly reported a Trojan

From two days ago, McAfee began saying the computer was not protected properly for internet and e-mail, and McAfee now freezes on attempts to enable said protection.

I installed and ran Malwarebytes, it stops on a "731 (0,6) error. If I press "OK" to continue it finishes the scan and proposes removal of a "Malware.Trace" file, but when this is removed on subsequent scans Malwarebytes hits the same error stop, then displays the same "Malware.Trace" problem.

When I run GMER, it crashes the system several minutes into the scan, displaying a blue screen with a "STOP: c000021a Unknown Hard Error" message.

Here is the DDS log, The zipped DDS "Attach", the first (deep scan) Malwarebytes log and the latest Malwarebytes log are attached.

Thanks again!

Hello Montgomery 180,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.
1.
Please try and running GMER Again in Safemode.
Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.
Please see here for additional details.

2.
Download and Run RKill
Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply
3.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
Gmer log
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Hi Fireman.

Tried running GMER in SafeMode, this time got the blue screen message:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. The problem seems to be causued by the followng file: kftdipoc.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

If this is the first time... (etc.)

Technical Information:

***STOP: 0x00000050 (0xB9c86B30, 0x00000001, 0xB9C3BFA6, 0x00000000)

*** kftdipoc.sys - Address B9C3BFA6 base at B9C30000, Datestamp 4b274f8d

Beginning dump of physical memory... (etc)"

Also please know that the computer will not connect to the internet, I'm using my computer to download the programs and putting them on the computer via memory stick, so is there some other way I can get the Recovery Console installed (have not got that far yet, just saying...)

Finally, can we just uninstall McAfee? Although I believe I have disabled it, it still pops up now and then to say the computer "is not protected"

I plan to put Avast on the computer once this is all sorted.

thanks, Mont.

Finally, can we just uninstall McAfee? Although I believe I have disabled it, it still pops up now and then to say the computer "is not protected"

Yes we can o ahead and remove Mcafee.
Uninstall McAfee

You should be able to remove McAfee products via Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
If you need instructions on how to do so, please consult: How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer

The following removal utility can be used to uninstall the program if the uninstall via Add/remove does not work:
  • Download MCPR.exe to your desktop.
  • Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.
  • Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.
McAfee should now be removed from your PC.

Original instructions here:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

2.
With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt and new HiJAckThis log in your next reply.

Hi Fireman,

I uninstalled McAfee on my wife's computer. That was fine.

Then, with my laptop (not the problem computer), I followed this instruction from your post above: "Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994" to download the Recovery Console.

With the page loading, my Firefox froze. Task Manager would not allow me to close Firefox. My "start" menu would not allow me to shut down the computer. I pressed and held the on/off button for a few seconds, it turned off.

I waited then powered it on again, it now hangs at the "ThinkPad" screen, Windows does not start up. So, my laptop now does not work.

Now, I'm on my desktop, the last working computer in our home. It has not been a good couple of days.

Adding: Weird, my laptop does boot when it's out of the docking station, only hangs on the ThinkVantage screen when it is in the docking station, working on this at the same time I'm working on my wife's computer's problems, hop to post the requested info on the latter in a couple of hours.
~that was resolved, unrelated to the main problem ;)

Ok back in action.

After removing McAfee I tried running GMER again, which finished the scan, the "ark" file is attached.

Neither my wife's nor my XP machines have a "XP CD" -- didn't get one when we bought our computers. She's XP Home SP3 (Japanese). Is there a way to install this Recovery Console without the CD or making floppies? (no floppy drive in the computers either).

(Is there a way to find out if the Recovery Console is already on a machine?)
~ok got this done.

RKill log also attached.

Thanks for your patience!

Hello,

Please copy and paste all logs into your reply.

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
  • Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connection ->Network Connections.
  • Right-click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection (if you are using dial-up), and left-click on the Properties option.
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically".
  • Click OK twice.
    spacer.gif
  • Go to Start -> Run...
  • In the Open: field type cmd and click OK or hit Enter.
This will open a Command Prompt.
  • At the DOS prompt screen, type in ipconfig /flushdns and then press Enter (notice the space between "ipconfig" and "/flushdns").
  • Exit the Command Prompt.
  • Reboot your PC and try to open any website.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Hello,

I need to know how your machine is running everytime you post. Sometimes the logs will look clean but Malware is still affecting the machine. So I need to know whats going on at all times.

We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
Killall::

File::
c:\docume~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\aytdjo.sys
c:\docume~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\erujszlxergr.sys
c:\docume~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\fffablkh.sys
c:\docume~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\kzmacwc.sys
c:\docume~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\tpywwjilfhq.sys
c:\docume~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\vwpepsdhamwxqd.sys
c:\docume~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\yoprhimflma.sys
c:\windows\System32\Drivers\ifdalxou.sys
c:\windows\System32\Drivers\spskuljz.sys
c:\windows\System32\Drivers\zmxytfvl.sys

Driver::
zmxytfvl
abpvsysjjnznhsn
apaj7iui43uauoay
dnxprijtumcem
hoeucz
hryoql
pgfmnco
rongkxdmducrm
rtfiecm
ifdalxou
spskuljz
aswSP
aswFsBlk

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Ok ran the script in Combofix, here is the log below.

The "Dell Network Assistant" was coming on after every Combofix reboot so I removed the program using Add/Remove in the Control panel. The "My Network Connections" folder appears to be empty. Hard to say how the computer is running elsewise, if I run an Avast scan the two "Whistler" files always show up and can't be deleted.

Hello,

Why are you running and doing things without me telling you to do so? Why run scans without me telling you to do so.
I dont know whats going on or what your changing. If you continue to do things on your own I will no longer be able to assist you. Now we must start all over. Because I have no Idea what you have done and what you have changed and uninstalled and installed. DO you understand that you not suppose to make changes with out me telling you so?

What whistler Files? Please post a copy of the avast report
Why uninstall "Dell Network Assistant"?< This was coming up probably to help fix your internet connection.

Things to include in your next reply:
Answers to my questions
A new DDS log
A new Gmer log

Sorry about that! I am using another computer to go online, so the infected computer is mostly just used to execute the instructions you give me, but yeah, I tried to impress the wife and tried a couple of other things, sorry again.

I uninstalled Dell Network Assistant, which kept popping up after every reboot (I thought this might interfere with the Combofix reboots). And on day one, as I posted, I uninstalled McAfee and installed Avast. I just did a new DDS and GMER, below, have not touched the machine since -- promise I'll just sit on my hands and wait for your further instructions thumbup2.gif

(Symptoms with the computer continue to include no internet connectivity, Network Connections folder is empty, no network icons in the system tray, only loud beeps instead of regular system sounds, etc.)

Don't know how to save results logs from Avast! but it found two items:
C:\System Volume Information\Whistler\smss.exe - Win32:Unruy-E [Tr]
C:\System Volume Information\Whistler\svchost.exe - Win32:Unruy-E [Tr]

Hello Montgomery 180,.
Congratulations! You now appear clean! specool.gif

Uninstall Combofix
  • Make sure that Combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
o *If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Click on then Run....
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

between the "x" and "/".> <--- It needs to be there
Windows Vista users: Press the Windows Key + R to bring the Run... Command and then from there you can add in the Combofix /Uninstall

  • Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important actions:
"This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore".

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

We Need to Clean Up Our Mess
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

Recommendations
Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.
  1. Install and maintain an outbound firewall
  2. Install Spyware Blaster and update it regularly
If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  3. Install the MVPs hosts file, and update it regularly
You can use the HostMan host file manager to do this automaticly if you wish.
For more information on the hosts file, and what it can do for you, you can view the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  4. Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
  5. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
    1. Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
    2. Click "All Programs"
    3. Click "Windows Update"
    4. On the left, choose "Change Settings"
    5. Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
    6. Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
    7. Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
    8. Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
    9. Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
  6. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on your machine.
  7. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
