Hello Bleeping Computer experts and thanks in advance for your priceless assistance!

About 48 hours ago I experienced marked sluggishness on my PC, both acquiring Web pages and just in general operations. I ran my Microsoft Security Essentials (kind of an oxymoron, no?) and Mal-ware Bytes to see what was up. I have ran both the full and quick scans with both of these products and they found 2 tracur.c trojans, an alureon.h virus, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\avsuite (Rogue.AntivirusSuite) and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\avsoft (Trojan.Fraudpack) in the registry, and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\sysReserve.ini (a tracker apparently). All of these were removed successfully but I am still experienceing issues although the anti-malware programs are saying everything is clean.

One of the issues is the refusal of my network card to assign a new IP address when I restart the computer. It was fixed at 0.0.0.0 and I was able to use the Comcast diagnostic program to fix this but with each restart I am having the same issue.

Also, my overall display has changed and reverted to a Windows 97-esque vibe and there is no option in my Display Properties for the Windows XP style any more.

Lastly, my Recycle Bin shows as empty even after I put something in it.

These issues are annoyances at best but I don't want to fix them and ignore the fact that something bigger may still be going on. Here is my Hijack This log, and if you could recommend an awesome, free antivirus/firewall product I would be SUPER appreciative!!! Thanks again!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below I will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

" Extinguishing Malware from the world"

The Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal forum is very busy. If I'm helping you and I've not posted back within 24 hrs., send a PM with your topic link. Thank you.

ALL OTHER HELP REQUESTS VIA THE PM SYSTEM WILL BE IGNORED. The Forums are there for a reason!
Thanks-

Hello Fireman4IT, and thanks! As you suggested I have taken a few more steps and here is what has happened so far.

UPDATE FROM LAST POST: After running MS Security Essentials several times and removing the alureon.h and hiloti.gen! malware, I finally came up clean. After restarting my machine, I noticed that my Appearance theme was back to the Windows XP style and my network card did not fail to reassign a new IP address.

I have however experienced the following new issues:

1. Upon restarting the machine, I get a dialog box titled Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. That message states that there was a runtime error, referring to a partial file name of "C:\Program Files ..." with no specific file name. The message goes on to say the application in question has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
2. Immediately after that dialog box closes, the MS Error reporting dialog comes up and states that Application Launcher encountered a problem and had to close
3. I was able to get online, but several times it has stopped responding on a page reload and I get a Firefox message in my browser window that tells me Mozilla is working offline and to uncheck the "Work Offline" feature. The browser is not in offline mode and the connection resets itself within a minute or so. A manual restart of the modem also fixes this bug.
4. When attempting to run the GMER as requested and unchecking the appropriate boxes, the program stops and my computer freezes some time after it launches the scan. It gets stuck on the same file, referred to as \Device\RKSAMPLE0, but the location/file called RKSAMPLE0 does not exist on my machine as far as the Search function is concerned, and the place \Device\ is not known either. I took some photos of the screen in two sections so you can read them (Values, and File Names). I attached them here so that you can see the data it is able to come up with before it freezes.

I did the DDS scan as requested, and here are the contents from the dds.txt file:

Hello,

1.
Lets try running GMER in Safemode.

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.
Please see here for additional details.

2.
Download and Run RKill
Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

3.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
Gmer log
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Hi - sorry it has taken me so long to get back but everything I do seems to cause another problem. First, GMER does only the following things in SafeMode: (a) freezes while scanning, and (cool.gif freezes when I attempt to save the report when it is through scanning. I moved on to the Rkill step and this worked fine, and the log file said that the only thing it stopped was the rkill.scr file. When I attempt to run Combofix, it tells me that I have COMODO antivirus running which could destroy my machine if I continue Combofix. I do not have that program installed (verified by looking in add/remove programs and Administrative Tools>Services), and I cannot find an associated process when I look at my process manager. I am so scared to continue with Combofix - what should I do??

Thanks again,
Alicia

p.s. Internet Explorer is working OK, but Mozilla is stumbling intermittantly, i.e. loading pages endlessly with no results. Also, I used the registry values in my DDS log file to determine where the Comodo detection may be coming from and I removed the registry entries associated but DDS still reports Comodo AV and FW are running from those registry keys.

Thanks!

Hello,

Please don't make changes to your machine without my prior knowledge or help. Doing these things could cause possible damage to your machine in that we create and design fixes for your machine based on what log or what you have told us last.
I hope this makes sense. smile.gif

Lets try to disable your Comodo. If Combofix still says it is running in the background go ahead and run COmbofix in Safemode.

How to Disable Comodo Firewall Pro (free Personal)
  • Right-click the system tray icon.
  • Select Exit.
  • On the Pop up window, Click the Yes button.
  • You successfully disabled Comodo Firewall.

You can disable theAV part by right clicking CIS tray icon & choose disable on antivirus security level

Please rerun Gmer with Services and Devices unchecked. Try Gmer first before running Combofix. Once again if you can't get a log then go ahead and proceed with Combofix.

Hello again - here's what's happenend.

1. I unchecked the Services and Devices in GMER and tried running again. After scanning for close to 12 hours, the machine rebooted and reported that it had recovered from a serious error. The error signature had the following characteristics

There were two files created that were included in the error reporting to MS so if you'd like them just let me know!

2. Shortly after system recovery Avast notified me of a rootkit that was about to launch called win32:rootkit-gen [rtk] that was in file C:\windows\dwwiinfo.dll. The process was C:\progra~1\common~1\micros~1\dw\dwtrig20.exe and it was isolated by Avast.

3. ComboFix ran well and installed the recovery program from MS. Here are the contents of the combofix log:

Hello,

Well lets see if we can clean the machine of its leftovers.

1.
I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Avast! Antivirus or Microsoft Security Essentials or COMODO Antivirus.

2.
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

2.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
Killall::

File::
c:\windows\Nnafowukati.dat
c:\windows\Alazovapu.bin
c:\windows\system32\dwwiinfo.dll
c:\windows\trz8.tmp

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Casey\Application Data\mjusbsp

Domains::

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\appcertdlls]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusOverride"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running.

Well I feel cleaner already! Thanks so very much...I just returned to school after 10 years and am taking online classes that started yesterday (perfect timing) so your help is even more valuable than usual!

I have uninstalled my MS Security Essentials as I think Avast does a better job of letting me know of real time issues. As for COMODO, I really have no clue where DDS and CF are getting that from - I don't have that program installed and it doesn't appear in any searches nor do the common COMODO processes come up in my Task Manager. Any ideas about that? Should I just stop worrying???

As for my system performance I can tell a big difference with Mozilla and overall performance. My network connections have been steady with no hiccups so far. My CPU load has gone way down and things are pretty much back to normal that I can tell anyway. Is there anything I can do to prevent the re-occurrence of these types of malware? Was there a specific type found? Thanks again for all of your help - modest PayPal donation is on the way smile.gif

Hello,

Things are looking alot better.

QUOTE
I have uninstalled my MS Security Essentials as I think Avast does a better job of letting me know of real time issues. As for COMODO, I really have no clue where DDS and CF are getting that from - I don't have that program installed and it doesn't appear in any searches nor do the common COMODO processes come up in my Task Manager. Any ideas about that? Should I just stop worrying???

Well It could a left registry key that is showing it as still there. We will do a search just to make sure. Then we will get rid of it if there is no Comodo on your machine.

QUOTE
Is there anything I can do to prevent the re-occurrence of these types of malware? Was there a specific type found? Thanks again for all of your help - modest PayPal donation is on the way.

In my final response I will give you some ways to help make you more secure. There is no one thing to have or buy that detect everything.

1.
New Adobe Reader Installation:
  • Go here and click on the Download button to download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

2.
Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

3.
Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
More information with a screenshot, can be found here.

Things to include in your next reply::
Uninstall_list.txt
How is your machine running?

OK I have installed Update 20 for Java, and I actually uninstalled all of the other updates the other day as I had an issue with accessing an online class and the tech for the school determined the number of Java versions were causing a problem.

I also updated Adobe and ran the HiJack This Uninstall Manager. Here is that log:

Hello,

Sorry to hear you having medical issues. Lets get rid of those Comodo registry entries and do one more online scan.

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
SecCenter::
AV: COMODO Antivirus *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {043803A5-4F86-4ef7-AFC5-F6E02A79969B}
FW: COMODO Firewall *enabled* {043803A3-4F86-4ef6-AFC5-F6E02A79969B}

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
Bitdefender log
How is your machine running now?
