Hi,

I've recently caught a very bad virus. My ISP has informed me that someone has been using my IP address to send out spam. I 've had to post this message from another computer as it will not even allow me to post a message from my computer to the bleeping computer forum.
I've included the DDS, and have attached the attach.txt. ark.txt and have also included an MBAM and HJT log. I can see in the MBAM log the issues but need your help.
I'll give you a brief rundown what happens:
A)after booting my computer I get a message saying: Kernel Verifier has encountered a problem and needs to close. It asks to to debug, send/don't send a log report. I don't send. A message box then comes up saying:Error loading C://Documen/Name/Locals~1/Tmp/kpjhm2s7w.dll module could not be found.
I hit ok, it goes away and seemingly the computer is fine.
However, I obviously am infected and some of the things I cannot do are: I try a system restore in regular and safe mode and I get: System restore has been turned off by group policy.
I type in regedit and I get: Registry Editor has been disabled by administrator. I downloaded regtools and that allows me to look at my registry but I am fearful to change anything.
I hope you can help. Many Thanks.

Hello doughboy1,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

2.
Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in remservice.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

CODE
@echo off
sc stop kzwqvvdw
sc delete kzwqvvdw
del remservice.bat
EXIT

Locate the remservice icon on your desktop and double click it. A box will pop up briefly on your screen and disappear, this is normal.

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

3.
Download and Run RKill
Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

4.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply:
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

thanks very much fireman.
i had previously run combofix 6 months ago based on a problem i posted. i have the recovery console on my computer from a privious running (I think) (don't know if that makes a difference).
i run combofix and it says it's trying to find a restore point. it seems to be stalling at that point as it's been an hour and is still on the same screen.
i logged off and tried again and same thing happened (stall)
What would you like me to run? shoould i run in recovery console mode and try combofix then?
I'll await your reply.

thanks

Hello,

Please try and run Combofix in Safemode.

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.
Please see here for additional details.

fireman,
running combofix in safemode worked. it then re-booted to normal mode and was preparing a combofix log. told me not to open anything until it did. it seems to be taking a while. i will leave it until you say something else. it automatically enabled antivir guard in normal mode and 1 virus keeps pooping up and being blocked. not sure if im suppossed to disable antivir as it previously said i should disable any antivirus running.
i will let it run a while and see if it creates a log. anything else you recommend?

Hello,
Antivir should be disabled. It might be detecting combofix as a virus.

The Combofix log will be loacted at C:\Combofix.txt if there is one.

Thanks. The only thing that seems to be happening right now is that the AntiVir Guard keeps detecting and blocking the same virus.
It says C:\WINDOWS\temp\Q79c17.tmp
Is the TR/Alureon.BP.23 Trojan.
I delete or deny access and it pops up regularly still.

Here is the combofix log:

Hello,

We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
Killall::

Rootkit::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\YW31y9c.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\MY55o.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\O1793aAA.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\WS55s.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\QGMYW93.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\SK1y9c1sK.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\WS79sK79.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\U7931k.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\6b53e52b.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Bbinob.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Bbinoa.exe

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Here you go:
a couple things as side which I haven't checked yet. I ran the combofix as you requested and posted the log before checking these things that were occuring before doing this last combofix.
a)a Just-IN-Time box opens up during my use on the internet. Says Please select a debugger and gives me the option of : A New Instance of Microsoft Script Editor.
Also, I was getting a Now Run DLL as an App Error Box.
it said: Run DLL as an app has encountered a problem. Send/Don't send errot report. Thought you would like to know that.

Combolog as requested:

Hello,

Things are looking alot better, but we still have much work to do.

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
Killall::

Rootkit::
c:\windows\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\M79317.dll
c:\windows\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\KUOCEI179.dll
c:\windows\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\W9uOC9s.dll
c:\windows\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\SKU93i79.dll

File::
c:\program files\SuperAdBlocker.com\Super Ad Blocker\SABKUTIL.sy
c:\windows\system32\drivers\mvstdi5x.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\sysam.exe

Folder::
c:\program files\Search Toolbar

Registry::
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{9d425283-d487-4337-bab6-ab8354a81457}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SearchToolbarLib.CSearchToolbarImpl.1]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{E43AD97A-5248-46A7-BB03-35574058224C}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SearchToolbarLib.CSearchToolbarImpl]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Webbrowser]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3.
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

You can refer to this short video by: neomage
**Note**
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
MBAM log
ESET log
A new DDS log
No need to post Attach.txt this time
How is your machine running now?

Hello, doughboy1.
Congratulations! You now appear clean! specool.gif

Uninstall Combofix
  • Make sure that Combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
o *If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Click on then Run....
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

<Notice the space between the "x" and "/".> <--- It needs to be there
Windows Vista users: Press the Windows Key + R to bring the Run... Command and then from there you can add in the Combofix /Uninstall

  • Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important actions:
"This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore".

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

We Need to Clean Up Our Mess
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

Recommendations
Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.
  1. Install and maintain an outbound firewall
  2. Install Spyware Blaster and update it regularly
If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  3. Install the MVPs hosts file, and update it regularly
You can use the HostMan host file manager to do this automaticly if you wish.
For more information on the hosts file, and what it can do for you, you can view the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  4. Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
  5. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
    1. Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
    2. Click "All Programs"
    3. Click "Windows Update"
    4. On the left, choose "Change Settings"
    5. Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
    6. Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
    7. Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
    8. Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
    9. Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
  6. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on your machine.
  7. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
