Have come across this great forum & hoping you can help me as am at my wits end with this virus! I left my laptop while I went away and have come back to a virus affecting my web browsers. None of my flatmates have owned up to it though!
The virus/trojan seems like a pretty standard thing from searching online, it is affecting my use of search engines so bringing up other pages or search sites (particularly ask.com) whenever I do a google search, and esp if I search anything to do with computer viruses!!

It is also popping up random adverts during my normal web browsing.

I have performed both an AVG scan and a Malwarebytes scan (in safe mode) and while both found infected files and deleted them, the virus is still present. The same scans are now showing no virus but both firefox and internet explorer are still affected (despite me reinstalling and defaulting all the settings/clearing all security settings etc).

Any ideas?

Anyway I have ran the programmes this forum requested and below is my DDS log:

Hello and Welcome to Bleepingcomputer

Please note we are very busy, so if I don't hear from you within 5 days the topic will be closed, If you have
since resolved your issues I would appreciate if you would let me no so I can close this topic.

We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following bold text.
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s

  5. Push the button.
  6. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Hi daniel3982,

When replying with your logs please paste them into the thread, rather than attaching them, thanks.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Cancel any prompts to download the latest CureIt version and click Start.
  • At the prompt to "Start scan now", click Ok. Allow the setup.exe/driver to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Hi there,

Ran that programme (scan took 3 hours mind wacko.gif ) and it found the backdoor.tdss.565 virus and deleted it but unfortunetely on resetting my PC (and running cccleaner and resetting completely internet explorer) the same thing happened when I used google, put in the virus name in a search engine and when I clicked the link it took me back to another spam site. More pop-ups have came up while typing the message too.

Hi daniel3982,
  • Go to Kaspersky and Download TDSSKiller.zip.
  • Extract the contents of TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop.
  • Double click on TDSSKiller.exe to run it.
  • If it finds something and asks you what to do, follow the instructions to type in "delete".
  • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called TDSSKiller.txt(with time+date appended) please post this log in your next reply.
