Hello,

My netbook became infected with Antimalware Doctor a few days ago. I followed the steps on this site to try and remove it. The initial fake security warnings that came up stopped, but was still having some issues. The "warnings" popped up again today so I went through the same steps again today to get rid of them, but am still have inthe same additional issues.

1) My browser (IE 8) randomly goes to different sites. Sometimes a search via Google is redirected to some odd search engine, Other times a new window opens with a completely unrelated site. This has happened a several times, but has been to a different site each time.
2) Internet connection not working properly. Am able to get online using my WWAN connection, but not with my WLAN (Wi-Fi) connection. When trying to connect via WLAN, my connection-making-software (VZ Access Manager) shows a connection has been established, but IE shows the "Page cannot be displayed" error.
3) Start menu still shows a folder for Antimalware Doctor that contains two items "Antimalware Doctor" and "Uninstall". Doesn't show real icons, just the little white window w/blue title bar. I have not attempted to open or delete either of them.
4)I cannot successfully run GMER. First time I tried, it ran for several hours, hung repeatedly, and eventually completed. When I tried to save the file w the report, my machine completely froze and had to be restarted. Today when I tried to run GMER, the machine restarted on its own in the middle of the scan.

Please help me get my machine back to normal and, if possible, please point me in the direction of some anti-virus/anti-spyware software that would work well on my netbook.

Thanks!
- Marisa

Hi,

Please see if you're able to run GMER by having just sections option checked.

Hello again,

uTorrent

Above listed ones are P2P file sharing programs. P2P downloads are nowadays one of those things that most likely bring infection into the system. My recommendation is to uninstall these (and other if present) P2P file sharing programs.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds.txt log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi...

I deleted utorrent. That program hasn't been used in several months, if at all.

Have a question about combofix - how long should it take to complete? Screen says should be less than 10 minutes, but could double. It has been running for well over an hour. What should I do?

Thanks!
Marisa

Hi,

Has the progress bar gone any further? If it still hasn't progressed, open task manager and see if you can find PEV process running there. Kill it and see if ComboFix continues.

Combofix is still running and doesn't show a progress bar. Just says
"Scanning for infected files..."
"this typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes"
"however, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

Also, there are 55 processes listed, but no PEV process listed.

I don't think combofix is going to run. I left it on for several hours today and never got past the message that said it shouldn't be longer than 10 minutes.

My battery died on the way home. When I was able to plug in & power on, there were a couple of screens asking if I wanted to start xp or Windows recovery. It automatically selected xp & the machine started.

Tried again to run combofix - has been running for nearly an hour and has still not gone past the same screen.

Not sure if it will help but here's what's listed in task manager (still no PEV). Sorted list by username:

alg.exe
svchost.exe (2 of them)

Did you remember to turn AVG off properly? I see many of its processes running there. Please try to run ComboFix in safe mode if it still gets stuck even if AVG disabled.

Hi,

I followed the instructions to disable avg prior to attempting to run combofix the 1st time. The instructions only disabled part of the program. I went back in & attempted to disable more components, restarted in safe mode but combofix still won't run.

Looking @ task manager now (still in safe mode) there are still a few avg processes listed. Specifically:

Avgcsrvx.exe is listed twice
avgchsvx.exe is listed once

Should I uninstall avg altogether?

Thanks again for helping me try to fix this...smile.gif

Hello...

Really wish I had better news but, Combofix still won't run. Still stopping at the same point.

I have also not been able to uninstall AVG. Tried both in and out of safe mode but keep getting the same error message:

Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....Access is denied.

I re-ran DDS while in safe mode, here is the updated log. Am sending this from my phone so it's not letting me upload the attach file. please let me know if you need that file & will try to find a way to get it uploaded.

Hi,

Look for ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt file on your c: drive (c:\ or c:\qoobox). Post the contents if found.

Try to uninstall AVG with this remover.

Hello...

Was able to install avg using the avgremover. Thanks smile.gif

Combofix, however, still will not run either in or out of safemode. The file you asked me to look for doesn't exist on my machine.

Would it be helpful to remove & reinstall Combofix? If so, how do I uninstall since it doesn't show in the list for add/remove programs. Have downloaded a fresh copy of combofix to my phone and can Bluetooth it over to the netbook if needed.

Thanks again!

Hi,

New version of ComboFix can be run without removing old one (just overwrite old ComboFix.exe). Give it one more try and if it doesn't work then do the following:
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Copy-paste following contents into custom scan -area:
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
