I'm getting the following message: Local Area Connection

This connection has limited or no connectivity.

background: so you know how I got here:

In the last couple of days I had google and other searchers starting to get redirected when ever I selected any search results. Malwarebytes and other virus tools didn't find any problems so I just worked around it for the time being by selecting the search by opening in a new window.

This afternoon I needed to transfer some video from my camera via firewire to my computer. However when I finished I was getting the no local Area connectivity message.

so first I tried this after seeing someone with a similar sounding problem:

Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.

Still had connectivity problem

Then I tried a system restore from as far back as it would go (several months ago when the system was working fine) and again have the connectivity problem - hopefully the search issue is gone but I can't test because I have no connection.

So I now I gave up trying to fix it myself and am looking for help.

Thanks in advance

PS - I checked the cable to the computer - the system was nice enough to alert me when I disconnected it
forgot to add I'm running windows xp
Dell xps 400 computer
