Hi,

I hope you are able to help with me this... I have a friends laptop that is currently badly infected with something that is preventing it from connecting to the internet and is causing the machine to have major slowdowns. I have tried a few fixes already by installing some anti malware software which did detect and remove some trojans, but still the problems are persisting. I am unable to fully update the anti malware software due to no net access but I did however install updates via a USB key that I downloaded. This also was a work computer if you are wondering why the CISCO VPN is showing up.

Thanks in advance! Please see the following DDS Log, and I have also attached the two other logs required.

Hi Rhythm,

Welcome to Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. Please let me know in your next reply if you agree with this.

Please before rebooting do the following:
  1. Reset the LAN settings:
  2. Open IE Go to Tools => Internet Options => click on the Connections tab, then click on LAN Settings. The following items should be unchecked:
    • Automatically detect settings
    • Use a proxy server for your LAN.
    • Don't reboot yet.

  3. Open a notepad (Start > Run and type in Notepad )

Copy and paste the text in code box into it.

    CODE
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
    "Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6C,69,00,00

    • Save the file to the desktop as regfix.reg
    • Make sure the Save as type field says All files.
    • Locate regfix.reg on the desktop and double-click on it and confirm. It should look like
    • A window pops up asking if you are sure to add the file to the registry. Click Yes.
    • You get another window popup saying that regfix.reg successfully added to the registry.
    • Now you may reboot. Tell me how it went and if you have connection now.

Note: You have to turn off any registry protector software you have in order the changes to be taken place.

thumbup.gif Yes!!! Thank you!! Your fix has worked, and the computer is able to connect to the internet again.
The only remaining problem now is the computer is still running very very slow basically it took about 5 mins to open IE after clicking the icon and it seems to take a long time to open anything, or get any task done, even on boot it took forever to populate each icon in the lower right corner. Would you mind helping me fix that as well?

Great. thumbup.gif
  1. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components:
Click "start" and then "Control Panel" icon.
Doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
Uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_08

  2. Run CCleaner (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked). Then click run cleaner.

  3. Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    • First update it, to do that under the Update tab press "Check for Updates".
    • Under Scanner tab select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Ok.. I did everything in your list. MBAM didn't seem to find anything though, but I know I had run it before though and had removed some things.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with the tool. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • You will get a warning about the not trusted download sites for ComboFix, click Yes.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

ComboFix didn't removed any malware and didn't show any infection. The slowness doesn't seem malware related.
  1. Open a notepad (Start > Run and type in Notepad )

Copy and paste the text in code box into it.

    CODE
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
    "ProxyEnable"=-

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
    "ProxyServer"=-

Note: You have to turn off any registry protector software you have in order the changes to be taken place.

  2. To check the volume for errors:
    • Click start and then My Computer.
    • Right click the drive C and select Properties.
    • Under Tools tab press Check Now...
    • Put a check mark in both items and press start.
    • If you get a message click Yes to schedule the disk check and click OK and then restart your computer to start the disk check. Please be patient and let the system run. In some cases it might take a couple of hours and you don't have to sit there the whole time.

Hi farbar,

The computer is still running very slowly at times after all this, especially when trying to open up applications. It's definitely improved from where we started, but it's still noticeable quite a bit. Any other suggestions on what I could do next? I'm almost wondering if there is still remnants of something on there.

When i shut the computer down it says WindowName is not responding before it closes and it takes a really time to shut down, if that helps.

Also, when i go into Safe Mode with networking, the computer runs completely fine.

You may try the following.
  1. You have the program Spybot S&D (Teatimer option) running on your machine. We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do. This will only take a few seconds.
    1. First disable TeaTimer:
      • Run Spybot-S&D
      • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
      • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
      • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
      • Restart your computer.
Instruction is also here: How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Note:If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
    2. Then download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.
      • Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.exe and let it run.
Note: The Teatimer should be kept disabled until I give you the clean sign.

  2. Go to control panel and make sure Windows firewall is enabled.

  3. Now go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall AVG. Reboot and see if you see any improvement.

  4. Also post fresh DDS logs.

We are going to see if AVG has anything to do with the slowness. You have always the choice to uninstall the Avira and reinstall AVG.
  1. Please run Notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy and paste the text in the code box (without the word CODE) into a new file:

    CODE
    @ECHO OFF
    Reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /f
    Reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyServer /f
    proxycfg -d

    • Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
    • Select Save in: desktop
    • Fill in File name: fix.bat
    • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
    • Click save.
    • Close the Notepad.
    • Locate fix.bat on the desktop. It should look like this:
    • Double-click to run it.
    • A window flashes, this is normal.

  2. I recommend this free antivirus:
    Avira
    • Download the installer from softpedia.com link as it has a secure download mirror. Don't install it yet.
    • Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall AVG.
    • Reboot once anyway.
    • Install and update Avira.

  3. Please run DDS and post a fresh DDS.txt to your reply. No need for the Attach.txt. Also tell me if you see any change in performance.
