Posted 03 October 2005 - 09:34 AM

I have a spy-ware program on my PC.
I think it is stopping me from receiving traffic from my network and so I cannot access the Internet at home.
Spy-bot S&D has identified its location in my registry keys however I cannot jump to its location and cannot find it manually in my registry editor.
Ad-Ware SE cannot delete it either so I came here for help I have run Hijack-this and this is the log report.
Any help you can give to me would be gratefully received.
Many thanks,
epatchild

Hello,

Please restart your computer before proceeding with the next steps, because you're in the middle in installing something and it needs a reboot to finish it.
Also, SpyBot S&d is not finished yet and needs a reboot as well to delete some files. So, after reboot, Spybot S&d will load, before your desktop and anything else is loaded. Let it finish the scan.
When done, let's perform next:

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

* Download and install CCleaner
Do not use it yet.

* Download this regfix: HSfix
Unzip it and place it on your desktop, don't use it yet!

* Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

First, we will make your hidden files and folders visible.
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

* Please reboot your system into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start hijackthis and click scan and put a checkmark next to the following items:

* Close all open windows except hijackthis and click 'Fix Checked'.

* Navigate to and delete the following files if present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\appyr32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winhu.exe
c:\readme.exe
C:\WINDOWS\atljg32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcnva.exe

* Doubleclick on HSfix you downloaded earlier before which is present on your desktop and when it asks you if you want to add the contents to the registry, click yes/ok

* Still in safe mode Run Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner (bottom right)

* Go to start >run and type: services.msc and click OK
Scroll down in that list until you find the service Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
(please make sure you choose the one with Helper in it.. because there's also a legit service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator and Remote Procedure Call (RPC), without the word Helper in it. That is a good one, so please don't select that one. )
Doubleclick the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper . In the window that will appear, click on "Stop" (if not greyed out) and change the Startup Type to disabled.
Click apply and OK and close all open windows.

If you can't find above, Search also if one of next is in the list and perform the same as with the above one (click stop and set startuptype to disabled)

Network Security Service (NSS)
Workstation NetLogon Service

(don't worry if you can't find those.. and really make sure it's exactly the same name as mentionned before)

* Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

* Close Ewido

Hello,

Still some leftovers present:

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: Class - {3E589AC4-D875-E18F-230E-C2FBCC1516D6} - C:\WINDOWS\atlmn32.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: Class - {708A3F77-2B37-C3B7-492A-8F7BB57030BB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieii.dll (file missing)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Better to perform that onlinescan with bitdefender and/or Housecall as I asked you to get rid of the leftovers, because you forgot that step.

There are still some things you need to perform as well..

* Download: Hoster
Unzip hoster to an own folder.
Start Hoster.exe.
It could be possible that hoster will tell you that your Hosts file doesn't exist and if you want to create one. Click yes/ok.
If you don't get that prompt/question, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK.

This hijacker is also responsible for changing the ActiveX security settings to allow all.
To fix this...Open Internet Explorer > internet options > security > internet.
Press default level > OK.
Press custom level
In the ActiveX part:
Set "Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls" to prompt.
Se 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

Let me know afterwards how things are running. :thumbsup:

Hello,
Thankyou so very much for all the advice my PC works like new,
with the added advantage of having all the files I need on it! :thumbsup:
I have included my latest HJT log just incase I missed some thing.
Also something odd happened when I copied and pasted your last post,
and then printed it. I got some text that does not appear in your post:

In between,

* Download: Hoster
Unzip hoster to an own folder.
Start Hoster.exe.
It could be possible that hoster will tell you that your Hosts file doesn't exist and if you want to create one. Click yes/ok.
If you don't get that prompt/question, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK

.

and,

This hijacker is also responsible for changing the ActiveX security settings to allow all.
To fix this...Open Internet Explorer > internet options > security > internet.
Press default level > OK.
Press custom level

I got:

It could be possible that this hijacker deleated some files, so check if the following are
still present:

*Control.exe: Is in your C:\WINDOWS\system32. Download here when missing
*Shell.dll: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 Download here when missing

Please can you let me know why this happened and if I do need to install these files can you let me know.
Many many Thanks,
epatchild

Yes, I edited my post and left this part out:

*Control.exe: Is in your C:\WINDOWS\system32. Download here when missing
*Shell.dll: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 Download here when missing

Because if you were missing it, you'll get errors everytime. A previous version of this hijacker deleted those files, but not this one you were dealing with, so I left it out again. :thumbsup:

You were fast in printing the instructions, because I edited my post in the same minute. :flowers:

And I still see a clean log.
Glad everything is running great again. :trumpet:

Glad I could help you. :thumbsup:

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates, so visit asap: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to update to SP2 !!

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again! :flowers:
