Welcome kathy915 to Bleeping Computer.

Please remove MyWebSearch:
Move to Start > Settings > Control Panel
Double click Add/Remove Programs.
Within Add/Remove programs click the "Install/Uninstall" tab or click the "Change or Remove Programs" button.
Within this section you will see a listing of programs that are currently installed that support this feature. If the program I’m advising you to uninstall is listed within this list, highlight it and click the Add/Remove or uninstall option or button.

If the program is not listed within this list, let me know.

***

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

itircl

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

***

Open HijackThis
click on "None of the above, just start the program".
click on the "Config" button (bottom right),
click on "Misc Tools"
click on "Delete an NT Service" (a window will pop up)
Enter the below item into that field (make sure there are NO spaces before or after the name):

itircl

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.

***

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hhsetup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\197_150_ni_3.exe
c:\counter.cab
C:\WINDOWS\system32\itircl.exe

For these files, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.
Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Please do an online virus scan with Panda ActiveScan Here. You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here.
***

Also post me a fresh HijackThis log.

I followed your directions here are my results:
When I ran Hijack this in safe mode the following were not found in the scan (I ran it 3 times to see if they might come up):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL (file missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [hhsetup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hhsetup.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [197_150_ni_3] C:\WINDOWS\System32\197_150_ni_3.exe

O4 - Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZUxdm143YYUS

O23 - Service: itircl - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\itircl.exe (file missing)

As you can see when I ran out of safe mode they are present.
Should I check these off while not in safe mode and do fix checked out of safe mode.

Also went to Panda to do a scan attempted 3 times and it froze everytime it got to file:

C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE

I had to end the program with task manager each time, and it said it was not responding.

I have done another Hijack This log as follows. I will await your further instructions.

Thanks for the help.

It can take very lang for a file to be checked. I've seen people wait for an hours for the scan to move from one file to the next.

In normal mode, please put a check to those entries that were not visible in safe mode.
Reboot the system afterwards.

Let's use another tool.

Please open Ewido and update it to the latest definitions.

Run a full scan, please safe the report.

Open Notepad. Copy the purple text to an empty file.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{9FF05104-B030-46FC-94B8-81276E4E27DF}]

Save it:
Location: desktop
Name : unreg.bat
Type : all types.

Close Notepad. Double-click unreg.bat
Grant permission to add it to the Registry.

***

Remove Search-O-Matic ToolBar and/or Webalize Search Utility and/or WinDirect_is1and/or WinDirect:
Move to Start > Settings > Control Panel
Double click Add/Remove Programs.
Within Add/Remove programs click the "Install/Uninstall" tab or click the "Change or Remove Programs" button.
Within this section you will see a listing of programs that are currently installed that support this feature. If the program I’m advising you to uninstall is listed within this list, highlight it and click the Add/Remove or uninstall option or button.

If the program is not listed within this list, let me know.

***

Update and run AdAware SE 1.06 and remove what it finds.

Is the computer running ok?
If so, shall I post you some tips for the future and close this topic?

Tried to add the HKEY copied to notepad, saved to desktop, named it, clicked all files & there was one more choice encoding: left as ANSI.
When I double click on it from the desktop it just flashes on the screen & disappears.

Could not find the program you wanted me to remove in the add/remove listing.

Also My Web Search (Fun Cards) remains in the add/ remove and still get that RUNDLL message when try to remove.

Ran Adaware - only cookies found which I deleted.

Also went into my registry & under HKEY_Current_User : Software: Wild Tangent remains I deleted this from the add/remove file but there is still a file here

Under HKEY_Local_Machine : Software : My web search & Wild Tangent can be found here.

I know I might not belong in here but I go here to look sometimes to see what files look different, I haven't deleted anything without questioning it first. The only thing I deleted out of here was adobe reader.

Thanks again for all your help.

My mistake, sorry. Safe the file as unreg.reg
Then double-click that file to merge.
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from notepad into your post

Nothing showing in that list I worry about.

Please leave the Registry as is. A corrupt Registry is a broken down machine!

Use Windows Explorer to remove these folders:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
Close Windows Explorer when you are done.

Is the computer running ok now?

You're welcome.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with the instructions from the tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & Hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware – Download and install Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
