Hi all.. My neighbor has asked me for help fixing her computer. She says she was just surfing along the other day when suddenly things started popping up all over the place.

The first obvious problem was "Security Essentials 2010" .. so I ran MBAM and while it was scanning Avast stated reporting finding Win32.Qandr [rtk] infections.. so I shutdown avast and restarted the MBAM scan.. it seemed to deal with Security Essentials..

I ran Spybot afterwards and it reported Virtumonde.prx, Supsay.Smss32 and Win32.agent.chh ..

Having cleaned those, upon bootup I still get a couple flashes of a couple dos boxes popping up on the screen.. In my experience helping family members with their comps, Virtumonde isnt usually taken care of by a simple scan, so could you pelase look these logs over and let me know where to go next? smile.gif

thanks,

nopk..

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hello, nopk.
My name is etavares and I will be helping you with this log.

Here are some guidelines to ensure we are able to get your machine back under your control.
  • Please do not run any unsupervised scans, fixes, etc. We can work against each other and end up in a worse place.
  • Please subscribe to this topic if you have not already done so. Please check back just in case, as the email system can fail at times.
  • Just because your machine is running better does not mean it is completely cleaned. Please wait for the 'all clear' from me to say when we are done.
  • Please reply within 3 days to be fair to other people asking for help.
  • When in doubt, please stop and ask first. There's no harm in asking questions!

Backdoor Warning
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you do decide to proceed, please continue with the fix below.

Step 1

Next, please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop as nopkCF.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on nopkCF.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply, along with any symptoms that are present after it runs.

Hi Etavares.. thanks for your help..

I have checked with my neighbor and she says she doesnt do any banking or anything she is concerned about privacy on this machine, so we'll take a stab at fixing it..

Any suggestions how she got this? Is passive infection likely or more likely that someones (her or her husband, kid etc..) run something on her machine?

--------------

I ran combofix, it found a rootkit, rebooted and began scanning again automatically.. unfortunately I hit the hotkey to trigger my KVM to switch over to another machine and didnt realize function lock was off, so I caused Combofix to hang.. I reset the system and re-ran combofix and it completed successfully, log below.

thanks,

Hello, nopk.

Hard to say how she caught this virus. Even up to date antivirus programs can't protect against new variants and threats until they're identified. Peer-to-peer programs, crack/keygens or clicking on the wrong website can all be vectors of infection, to only name a few. We need to manually remove a few items.

Step 1

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
File::
c:\windows\Vrusubikehej.dat
c:\windows\Edaruked.bin
c:\docume~1\windows\applic~1\qvjsge.dat
c:\windows\oqoyoyulidemaw.dll
c:\documents and settings\Windows\Application Data\qvjsge.dat

Folder::
C:\documents and settings\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\{2A486BDE-9EF2-47B3-B1D3-7FFAA7DD6BA0}

FCopy::
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\asyncmac.sys | c:\windows\system32\drivers\asyncmac.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Step 2

OK, since Combofix was interrupted, I'm not sure if it caught the backdoor rootkit or not. Please run another GMER scan exactly as before. We need to verify that infection is gone. Please post the GMER log and the Combofix log from step 1.

Hi Etavares..

When I drop CFScript onto Combofix I get a dialog box telling me there is a new version of Combofix and would I like to download it.. the first time I clicked no, immediately closed CF and re-downloaded it from Bleepingcomputer.. after re-running it it still tells me there is a newer version, do I trust this and click Yes or is it a hijack?

thanks,

nopk

Hello, nopk.

OK, looking much better. How is it running now? Let's update a known security hole and get a second opinion.

Step 1

Please pull anything out of hte recycle bin that you want to save. Part of this fix will empty temp files, and that does include the recycle bin.

Please download TFC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

Step 2

Next, we need to update Java.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 20 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) or Java™ in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step 3

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Hello, nopk.

Nothing too serious. Lots of leftovers in old restore points, something Spybot had already quarantined, and 2 pieces of malware that didn't appear active. That's actually a fairly good scan.

Please post a fresh OTL log for me. I think we can start to wrap this up.
