About 3-4 days ago I started getting Google redirects which was very strange as I rarely have had virus or Malware problems on this computer. Wednesday a program called Antimalware Doctor aggressively attacked my computer and through a constant scanning with AVG and Spybot S&D I regained control of the task manager and regedit (which for awhile were disabled)

I cleaned that program out of the registry and then added Superantispyware and MBAM to the clensing cycle. Now the computer is mostly back to normal but the google redirects still happen.

Following are the latest GMER and MBAM logs:

Hello kkth3

Welcome to BleepingComputer smile.gif
==========================
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click OTL to run it.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
====================
Download the following GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here
  • Download the randomly named EXE file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is since it is randomly named.
  • Double click on the new random named exe file you downloaded and run it. If prompted about the Security Warning and Unknown Publisher go ahead and click on Run
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically only C:\ should be checked)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
  • **Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
  • Note: On Firefox you need to go to Tools/Options/Main then under the Downloads section, click on Always ask me where to save files so that you can choose the name and where to save to, in this case your Desktop.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

You are welcome.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit.

This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

When I first had suspected this machine was compromised I went to a known clean machine and changed all of my passwords for financial critical accounts. For 2+ days I havent used a password for anything (other than these forums) which has been quite a bother to my normal habits. That said, I do have a couple of legacy programs on this computer that I am unsure if I could properly reinstall if I had to reformat (a pre-Adobe version of Dreamweaver in particular) so I would prefer to at least attempt to clean this computer first and use the reformat option as a last resort.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click on the file and choose extract all extract the file to your desktop then run it.
  • If prompted to restart the computer type in Y then it will restart.
  • Or if you are prompted with a hidden service warning do go ahead and delete it.
  • Once completed it will create a log in your C:\ drive
  • Please post the contents of that log
============
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

You are welcome smile.gif

1. Please open Notepad

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

This didn't seem to run as I had expected it to.

After dragging the script to the combofix program, combofix started to run.

Then a window came up saying combofix was out of date and it needed to be updated

I clicked ok and combofix continued. The little blue screen came up saying to expect about a 10 minute scan and closed within 5 seconds.

A DeQuarrantine log then came up... the following is all it had in that log:

QUOTE
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\documents and settings\Kris Hansen\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help\hh.dat.vir -> C:\documents and settings\Kris Hansen\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help\hh.dat ( 8766 bytes )

Combofix then seemed to be done - no reboot was requested.

I did, however, have to reboot as my connection to the network was dead and the reboot reinstated that.

What next?

ESET online scan isn't working for me. Once I click the EULA button it sits for awhile trying to load the ActiveX control. Finally the info button pops up saying I need to install the ActiveX control, but before I can click on it the window restarts itelf with a balloon saying there was an error with IE and it needed to refresh the window. It will continue that process in an endless loop nomatter how quickly I try to tell it to install the ActiveX.

Ok try the following one instead please.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Wow - when you said be patient with it, you meant it!

It took over an hour to load the scanner on the computer and nearly 4 hours to run the scan. However, it did find things. Hopefully we can do something about them.

Hi please delete any emails that have attachments in these boxes:
Inbox
Trash
Shopping.sbd\PayPal
Friends.sbd\Hick - Adrian, Pam & Family

This will remove the findings by Kaspersky.

After that let me know how things are running.
===============================
  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

This computer doesn't have an email program on it and hasn't since I rebuilt it years ago. I suspect that email was transferred over as a backup for a computer I had prior to this one.

Is it OK to erase the entire Thuderbird folder or will that not be good enough?
