Have Win 2000
Opened IE 6.0, uncontrolled pop-ups and program "ChatNow" installed on desktop.
Opened in safe mode. Got help in partially cleaning registry of obvious bad entries.
Ran Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D: Can't get rid of SurfSideKick and Apropos
or eliminate "repairs.dll" in Registry (it resets itself).
Help much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I am checking your log now and will return as soon as I have researched all the items.

While we are working together, please ....
  • Reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • If you are unsure of what to do, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Be patient. HijackThis logs take some time to research.
Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues: This may or may not, solve other issues you may have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. (Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.)
  • The process may take considerable time.

I got your message and will try to do whatever is needed as long as it takes to clear the machine. I just appreciate your time and effort.
I believe that I ran an online antivirus program a couple of days after this log was posted. Perhaps you'll need a new log run. Just let me know.

Thanks for your reply.

As you have just mention that you have ran an online AV scan a new HJT log would be very helpful. Also did the virus scan come back clean or not. If not can you tell me what it found.

Thanks

Sorry for the delay in responding. I had to be away from home for awhile.
I had typed a reply and accidently logged off, so I'll have to reconstruct it.
I ran the online AV several days ago and only remember that it found 3 problems
which I "fixed." Unfortunately, and perhaps not surprisingly the computer continues to have the same problems. I had tried to re-install Norton AV, but it wouldn't work.
Also, a box appears repeatedly in the regular mode (not Safe Mode) which says:
"<process has already exited> has generated errors and will be closed . . ."
I don't remember if I mentioned that "repairs.dll" appears in the registry and resets itself if I try to make it inactive by putting a "#" in from of the registry value.

Here is the current HJT log:

Hi rwrasche

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with Notepad to your desktop because we maybe restarting Windows into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Read this instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about something

Please Download RKFiles.zip

Create a new folder C:\Antispyware\RKFiles
Extract the contents of RKFiles.zip into the new folder you just created.

Next, Create a new Folder on Desktop. Name that Folder QOOLOGIC
Please download Findqoologic into the new Folder, and then unzip it into the new Folder.

Restart to safe mode. (tap f8 key during bootup)

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall NewdotNet. If you don't have that option or if you have difficulties then please follow the instructions on this site

Note: I suggest you remove NewDotNet unless you deliberately installed it. It is extremely dubious and commercially sponsered.

Open the C:\Antispyware\RKFiles folder
Double click on RKFILES.BAT

Give it time to run. this may take a while.
Save the text file it creates.
It should save by default to C:\Log.txt

Next, open the QOOLOGIC Folder and Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it.
Wait until a text file opens, post it in a reply to your thread after doing the rest of what follows here.
It'll take a while to run a full scan so please be patient.

Restart into regular Windows mode and post the contents of C:\log.txt and the find-qoologic results.

Sorry for taking so long. I had to download WinZip and then downloaded RKFiles,
but when I tried to use the link for Findqoologic I got stuck with a message that said

"The error returned was:
Sorry, some required files are missing, if you intended to view a topic, it's possible that it's been moved or deleted. Please go back and try again."

I am already in Safe Mode.
How do I get this?

Rick

Hi

Try this:

Download this file and extract the files from the zip:

Qoologicbatch

Go to the new qoologic folder and run the batch file. Give it time to complete. Look for a log called C:\log.txt - post the contents here.

Then continue with the rest of the instructions from my previous post

Below is the log from running qoologic, which was saved in a Notepad file labelled "log.txt" But let me be clear.
After removing NewdotNet (which is not listed in Add/Remove Programs) you want me to run the RKFiles.bat which will also yield a log.txt file, I think. Then post those results also here for you. Is that right?

Matthew,
Finally, I think I 've done successfully what you initially instructed me to do.

I uninstalled NewdotNet.
I posted the Qoologic log in the previous post.
Now here is the RKFiles log:

Hi

Thanks for the logs,

Attach to this thread is Find quoologic. The log from qoologic batch is not conclusive.

I would suggest we is download the file which is attached to this thread and then do the following:

Next, open the QOOLOGIC Folder and Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it.
Wait until a text file opens, post it in a reply to your thread after doing the rest of what follows here.
It'll take a while to run a full scan so please be patient.

Mat2,
I'm not sure if I did it right. When I ran the Find-Qoologic program,
I almost immediately got the following text file:

Check for missing files
.....
C:\WINNT\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT not there
.....
End check for missing files
.....
VXD Check
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers]

33,32,45,56,4e,54,31,2e,44,4c,4c,00,00
.....
End vxd check
Please post this in the forum
