VUNDO INFECTION SYMPTOMS

1. This pop up alert comes up every now and then:
"Attention! Your PC is in danger.
Your system requires AV check!
Av Check will perform a quick and free scan of your PC."

Then, it creates a new tab in Firefox, redirecting me to a website which looks like a fake antivirus program performing a scan.

2. Every time I perform a Google search and click on a result, it redirects me to other search websites/possible scams.

3. Vista’s link to Windows Update does not work and when I attempt to go to it manually through my browser, it gives me an error that the webpage cannot be displayed.

4. I attempted to follow the prep guide instructions but, while using GMER to scan, a blue screen comes up which says an error has occurred. It then tells me something similar to: "A process or thread crucial to the system unexpectedly exit or has been terminated. If this is the first time, restart the computer. If this reoccurs, check for disabled hardware. Or, check for BIOS updates." However, each time I tried to write this down word-for-word, my computer automatically restarted within 30 seconds. Thus, I restarted my computer and performed the scan again. The blue screen stopped my scan and restarted my computer a total of 3 times. I never finished the scan.

MORE INFORMATION

I use Sophos Anti-virus but noticed it wasn't starting up automatically/performing scans or updates for at least a week now.

On Sunday, May 16th, I installed AVG Anti-virus Free and performed a scan. It found 6 infections of Trojan horse with filenames such as “Trojan horse Java/Downloader.O” and I immediately had AVG remove it. Another scan came up with 0 infections but 36 warnings (mostly tracking cookies) which I also had removed.

Pop-ups and search redirects continued, so I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-malware. Full scan results were 20 registry keys infected and 3 files infected. I noticed in the registry keys list was “Trojan.Vundo” and “Adware.MyWebSearch”. According to removal results, it said it was “Quarantined and deleted successfully”.

Next, I downloaded Trend Micro’s RUBotted which showed “Bot Found” and in the log, “Detected DNS query of malicious domain”. I performed a scan using the HouseCall but it detected nothing.

Lastly, I downloaded VundoFix and performed another full scan which detected nothing.

I have attempted to complete the prep guide instructions but could not get the GMER to scan without a blue screen error and automatic restart of my computer. All I was able to do was save what I could after the restart. I have also attached a screenshot of what I see in the GMER window before performing a scan (except I would have unchecked the required boxes). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
1.Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
2.Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
3.Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
4.Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
5.Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

:run combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log From Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

1. I could not find Thread Tools on this forum. However, I did go to My Controls, Options, Email Settings, and then enabled "immediate email notification". Does this do the same thing?

2. From the ComboFix directions, I went to the following topic to figure out how to disable antivirus, antispyware, firewall programs: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/

However, directions to disable AVG Free 9.0's Anti-spyware component is not available on there, and I couldn't find it on AVG's website either. There is no option to reconfigure the Anti-spyware component and continues to show an active status on my AVG User Interface screen. Should I skip this and continue to run ComboFix?

I will wait until I hear back. Thank you for your help!

I have attached the log as a file and also pasted it here.

When I first ran ComboFix, it said "ComboFix has detected the presence of rootkit activity" and needed to reboot so I pressed OK and it restarted my computer, as well as ComboFix's scan.

After completing 50 stages of scans, it said it deleted certain files and then prepared the log. After I saw my normal desktop again, a program kept automatically configuring my HPPhotosmartEssential. It said, "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" and the installation package could not be found. It said to use a valid copy of the install file HPPhotosmartEssential.msi. I had to press cancel four times before it stopped restarting this configuration. However, my computer says my printers are ready for use. I'm not sure if this is a big problem or not.

Also, should I reenable my antivirus programs now?

Thanks!

Hello

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    Adobe Reader 8.1.2
    Coupon Printer for Windows

    and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Thanks for your quick response!

Malwarebytes' did not have a Show Results button. I couldn't perform the following instruction: "Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected." However, I continued with the scan, and the log is pasted below.

Two hours later, my ESET scan showed up with two Trojans. Please see below for the log. Thanks again.

I forgot to add that my Java is already the latest platform. However, I proceeded with the instructions for deleting the files.

Also, I have not experienced any random alerts or search redirects so far! Thank you.

While I am waiting for the next step, should I re-enable my antivirus programs?

Also, there is a normal Windows Update alert (next to the shutdown option). Should I install these updates?

Hello

Ok now please do this next

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
FCopy::
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\volmgrx.sys | C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-dynamicvolumemanager_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_dd02c2028628d6ec\volmgrx.sys

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

let me have this report

When it first finished, whenever I clicked any program (including Firefox), I got this error:

"Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion."

However, I restarted my computer, and the programs seem to open fine now.

Hello

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The Online scan is only reporting backups created during the course of this fix, and items located in C:\System Volume Information\, which is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache shortly.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

:DeFogger:
To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK

:Turn On Automatic Updates:
    Turn On Automatic Updates
    1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and useing often.
