Hi! I am sorry to do this but I can’t really think of anything else to do---I fear I may have a backdoor or a rootkit of some kind.

Story time: About two weeks ago I got the Vista Internet Security 2010 virus on my laptop; as I had gotten this virus once before (in March 2010) I knew how to deal with it and I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware right away. It seemed to get rid of the virus. The next day, it came back again, and I got rid of it again. However, after this my Norton antivirus started picking up a couple of different things, among which were: a Trojan, the “Packed!Mysticgen4 virus and a couple of tracking cookies.

Once Norton quarantined all that stuff, my computer seemed to be working fine, except that I kept getting alerts from Norton that “an intrusion attempt to your computer was blocked” – which felt to me like someone was trying to access my computer and perhaps the virus(es) has created a backdoor? I immediately turned off the internet on the laptop, and went on a different computer and changed all my passwords. I have used the laptop, but not the internet, since then with no problems.

How can I verify whether there is still anything on my computer, and if there is, how can I get rid of it? Thanks!

I also posted a topic here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/315998/virus/ and followed all of boopme's instructions (who was very helpful!)

I have also followed steps 6-9 of the prepartion guide, but I couldn't get Gmer to run (it ran, but then somehow disappeared)

That's okay.

When you can please run Rkill and Combofix

Download and Run RKill

Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • Please post the resulting log in your next reply.

Then

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Rootkit exits and Vundo file infector appears. Let's deal with that next.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

CODE

c:\program files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched .exe

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Hey m0le...I ran the new combofix thing, and i got a log, but when I try to open any internet browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome) it says "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Same happens if I try to run as administrator. So I don't know how to post the log...and I don't want to transfer it via usb to another computer for fear of transferring the virus with it.

Reboot the machine. smile.gif

You should then be able to retrieve the log.

If it doesn't pop up find it as below:

Please go to Start >Run > and copy/paste the following, then press Enter

C:\QooBox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A log file should open. Please post that in your next reply.

  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Leave the top box checked and then check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push

The rootkit infected a backup copy so we will need to replace that next.

Please do this:
  • Click on the Start button, then click on Run...

  • In the empty "Open:" box provided, type cmd and press Enter This will launch a Command Prompt window (looks like DOS).

  • Copy the entire blue text below to the clipboard by highlighting all of it and pressing Ctrl+C (or after highlighting, right-click and select Copy).

    copy C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-e..memorydevicesdriver_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_fd0def15b6a4c89f\ecache.sys C:\ /y

  • In the Command Prompt window, paste the copied text by right-clicking and selecting Paste.

  • Press Enter. When successfully, you should get this message within the Command Prompt: "1 file(s) copied"
  • Exit the Command Prompt window.

Now we can try and replace the file

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
FCopy::
C:\ecache.sys | C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-e..memorydevicesdriver_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_fd0def15b6a4c89f\ecache.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as Comfix.exe (called ComboFix.exe in the below graphic)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Now please rerun ESET to check this has now been dealt with.
