I recently downloaded an infected .exe file on my Dell computer, which gave me a virus. Its running Windows XP Home Edition. After working with it for about 6 hours I finally managed to remove the virus. However, while it was on my system, it changed my taskbar or theme settings. When I open a window, it is completely black. Search bars are completely black. My taskbar and start menu are black. I am unable to read any messages and am trying to repair it from memory. I have tried changing my Properties settings in safe mode to no avail. I have tried downloading programs to repair it, but due to the fact that its completely blacked out, I am unable to see the instructions given and cannot install the programs. If theres any way to repair this, please dont hesitate to post it.

EDIT: Moved from XP to more appropriate Am I Infected forum ~ Hamluis.
