It seems that this infection occurred within roughly the last 48 hours. Apart from some messages related to launching virus scanning (sorry, did not have the opportunity to take down the specific details at that time), I noticed that my laptop would no longer enter hibernate mode.

Unfortunately, I tried a number of "fixes," including (in no particular order) norton antivirus corporate edition, malwarebytes (which has worked for me reasonably well at several points in the past), superantispyware, rkill.exe, tdsskiller.exe, atf-cleaner.exe, and (probably unwise) combofix.

TDSSKiller.exe has repeatedly reported that my atapi.sys file (in c:\windows\system32\drivers) is infected. But my efforts to replace it with a good atapi.sys file, for example via Microsoft Recovery Console, have been ineffective. At least, TDSSKiller.exe continues to report that atapi.sys is infected, and it remains infected after rebooting.

At a minimum, I am seeking assistance to "kill" whatever continues to infect my atapi.sys file. I hope getting an uninfected, stable atapi.sys file in place will, in turn, allow my computer to enter hibernate mode. I also hope that there will be no further malware messages/antivirus popups that "scan" my computer.

I have previously relied on postings on bleepingcomputer.com for guidance with malware and viruses, but this is the first time I am posting logs and actively seeking a response from a bleepingcomputer.com volunteer. I am grateful for the services provided by bleepingcomputer.com, including the tools and general advice available on the website.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

myrti,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I look forward to working with you to try to resolve my problem. That problem currently seems primarily to be an infected atapi.sys file. It appears one symptom of that problem is that my laptop is unable to enter Hibernation mode. Beyond what I stated in my original posting, I will add here that my first clear sign of virus/malware problems was when I started getting Google redirects. I believe I fixed that problem (before ever posting to bleepingcomputer.com). If you need additional information, please let me know, and I will provide what I can.

Following are the cut-and-pasted logs from running OTL.

Hi,

tdsskiller was recently updated. Could you please download a fresh copy for me and run it:
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Thanks for another quick reply.

Here is the log file created by the updated version of TDSSKiller.exe:

Hi,

please try running ComboFix instead then:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Hi,

this is looking good. We do need a couple more fixes though:

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

CODE
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\WinXP-SP3User\Local Settings\Application Data\luowucstq
DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>File::
File::
c:\program files\Common Files\oxovyfe.ban
c:\program files\Common Files\dolyw.dat
c:\program files\Common Files\foxizupe.lib
c:\documents and settings\WinXP-SP3User\Application Data\grwqhp.dat

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Once ComboFix has finished running open Notepad and copy/paste the code box below into a new text file.
CODE
@echo off
reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi /v ImagePath /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d System32\drivers\atapi.sys /f >> result.txt 2>>&1
result.txt
  • Save the file as regquery.bat by choosing save as *All Files, and save it to your Desktop.
  • Locate "regquery.bat" and double-click on it to run. (It is important that you run the script from the drive where your operating system is installed).
  • It will open a text file, please copy the content in your next reply.
regards myrti

myrti,

ComboFix is currently running with CFScript.txt. Please note that upon launch, ComboFix came up with a message reading (in essence), "New Version of ComboFix is available. Would you like to download the new version. Yes/No." I chose No, and ComboFix appears to have proceeded normally.

I am using the version I downloaded only a few hours ago; I am wondering if a new version has just come out. In any case, if this message raises an issue, please let me know.

I will post the ComboFix log file and .txt file generated by regquery.bat when they become available.

One other note: following the previous running of ComboFix, I find that my computer is once again able to enter Hibernation mode--which is a good sign.

I'll post my .txt files shortly.

In answer to the initial question in your last post ("How is your PC doing?"), I might have liked to say that things were looking pretty good--but then I ran ESET and it found six threats. Also, since we started working on fixing things, I haven't really tried to use the computer to do anything other than run the various processes and programs you've been guiding me to.

By the way, on closing out of ESET, I checked off "Delete quarantined files" and I also checked off "Remove program upon closing"--hope this was okay to do. ESET took quite a few hours to complete its scan.

Here is the .txt file genrated by ESET:

C:\Documents and Settings\David\My Documents\FSS home printer driver HP 1012\lj1010seriesprnsyswin-en.exe probably a variant of Win32/Genetik trojan deleted - quarantined
C:\Documents and Settings\David\My Documents\FSS home printer driver HP 1012\lj1010seriesprintsys\hp LaserJet 1010 Series.msi probably a variant of Win32/Genetik trojan deleted - quarantined
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\pci.sys.vir_ Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\termdd.sys.vir Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP1163\A0178452.sys Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\48888.msi probably a variant of Win32/Genetik trojan deleted - quarantined

OF COURSE, at least some of the "threats" ESET has found appear to be located in places such as an HP Printer Driver file, so--speaking of course as a non-malware-specialist--I kind of wonder if every "threat" detected is real. But, you would know better than me.

Yet again, please accept my ongoing gratitude for your assistance. Looking forward to whatever's next.

Yes. I keep forgetting to add those in, actually you did me quite a favour there. whistling.gif

Let's break the Eset log up, cause it's not looking bad actually. smile.gif

I would agree with you that this looks like a false positive. If you want to be sure of this, you can upload the files to virustotal and see if any other program detects them:Please click this link-->Jotti
When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files listed above, then click Submit. You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.
If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Those are simply backups of files we have previously cleaned. I will give you instructions in my final post that will remove all backups, so that you get a clean bill of health. But even now these files can not do any harm to your PC as they have been stored away and are unable to get out on their own.

So besides the Eset scan your PC is running fine?
