I've scanned my system with my antivirus and anti-spyware software, but my PC still keeps crashing (Win XP). This could be a hardware problem, but I think its malware so I'm here to find out for sure. Also, I have two Windows directories, for some reason. One is in C drive, the other's in E drive. I've scanned the C drive, I'll also scan E.

And FWIW, That rootkit scanning software keeps crashing my PC, dunno what that means.

EDIT: Uploaded scan of E: drive too, as ark2.log.

Also whenever my computer crashes I get that Windows has recovered from a serious error message. Details-

Error signature:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe

    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thanks for the reply. My computer still randomly reboots (again, this could be a hardware problem, I'd like to eliminate malware from the possible causes), my internet connection randomly disconnects and reconnects, and it takes ages for my computer to boot (again, could be a hardware problem). I've tried the methods in the "is your computer slow" thread, and the problems persist.

Hi,

the logs so far are looking good.

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case uTorrent, Frostwire...). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

I also see you are blocking adobe activation sites. Please remove all adobe programs you have illegally installed.

That's good to hear. So its a hardware problem then.

And I'm aware of the risks of file-sharing. Thank you for informing me though. smile.gif

Not everything shows in an OTL log and I would run a couple more scans if you removed your cracked software. If not I'll close this thread.

Hi,

please run a scan with DDS then:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
    DDS.scr
    DDS.pif
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

As well as a scan with CKScanner:
Click HERE to download CKScanner and save it to your Desktop. <- Important
  • Right-click CKScanner.exe and click Image Run as Administrator in the context menu.
  • Click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop.
Copy the contents and paste them in your next reply.

Hi,

please also attach the Attach.txt.

Please also run a scan with Eset:
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Please also run a malwarebytes scan:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Hi,

thanks I didn't see that. Your logs are indeed looking clean, I don't think your Problem is malware related. I would suggest you run the following two tools to see if that helps with your slowness:

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

Make sure to include the space between the first "c" and the "/".

This will run the System File checker and it will scan for corrupt or missing files. It may prompt you to insert the CD if it needs to obtain files.

Please post back when it has finished letting me know what it has reported.

More info on this process can be found here.

1. Run Chkdsk
Running chkdsk may take some time to complete. Please be patient and do not use the computer, press any keys, or try to stop the chkdsk scan once it has started.
  • Right-click the Start button and select Explore
  • Navigate to your C: Drive, then right-click the drive and select Properties
  • In the Properties window that pops-up, click the Tools tab and then click on the button that says Check Now
  • If the User Account Control window pops-up asking for permission to run Check Disk, please click on Continue
  • In the Check Disk Options window that pops-up, place a check-mark in both boxes:
    • Automatically fix file system errors
    • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
  • Now click on Start.
  • A new window will pop-up saying, Windows can't check the disk while it's in use, click schedule disk check
  • Now shut-down your computer, not restart, and then turn on your computer.
  • When your computer turns on, you will see a blcak screen with white lettering, this is chkdsk running.
  • Let chkdsk run through its 5 Stages. When it is finished, your computer will boot to the desktop.
2. Chkdsk Log
  • Click on Start, then Run.
  • Copy and paste the following bold text in to the Open: box:
      eventvwr.msc /s
  • This will bring up the Event Viewer window
  • In the left panel click on Application
  • The chkdsk log should be the first entry, with a source of Wininit. If it is not the first log:
    • Click on View, and then on Newest First
    • This should place the chkdsk log at the top of the list.
  • Click on the entry once
  • Now right-click on the entry and choose Properties.
  • In the window that pops-up, click on (this will copy the log).
  • Paste the log in a Reply to this topic.

Let me know if this improves the behaviour of your PC.

This can be closed now. My PC crashed again and refused to start. I gave it to the dealer who sold it and its fixed now, and back to normal speed.

Thank you for your assistance. smile.gif
