Hello,

My computer seems to be badly hijacked. When i start up the computer, without doing anything, there are two instances of internet explorer that show up in my task manager processes, but no internet explorer windows show up immediately. However, if i let the computer sit, ad websites will pop up on their own, without my doing anything. Also, when on the internet, i'll be redirected to ad websites when clicking on links. I've run several scanning programs--Spybot, Malware Bytes, McAfee, MS malicious software removal tool. All of them have come up with different sets of threats, but at least some of them are unable to be removed. Logs below and attached. Thank you so much.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
1.Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
2.Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
3.Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
4.Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
5.Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

"GMER Rootkit Scanner"

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
      1.log from GMER
      2. Let Me Know Of Any Problem You May Have Had

I've run GMER 3 times now (it takes hours), and it won't let me save the log. i get an error dialog box--"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." and when i try to copy to clipboard, it won't let me open any sort of text editor to paste into--word, notepad, etc. Any ideas?

I have attached a log that GMER generated a day or two before you instructed me to run GMER. Don't know if it'll help. Thanks.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

When i run ComboFix, the program initializes, says "combofix is preparing to run", then backs up the registry, then says "scanning for infected files, this typically...". the program stalls for a couple minutes, a "blue screen of death" flashes for a moment, then the computer restarts itself. ARGHHHHH!!! Can i run this in Safe mode?

Also, I tried running windows update. whatever i'm infected with doesn't allow that to function.

Hello cswolf4918

It is most likely Mcafee causing the problem we are going to have to uninstall for the time being.

uninstall Mcafee from add/remove

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    McAfee SecurityCenter

    and click on remove

now run thier removel tool

:remove Macafee:

Note : You should first attempt to remove your McAfee consumer products using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel (Programs and Features, in Windows Vista). This is the best method. After uninstalling using Windows Add/Remove Programs, run the McAfee Consumer Removal Tool (MCPR.EXE) to ensure successful removal of all McAfee references.

Download the removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens...atches/MCPR.exe
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.
    • Note: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.EXE and select Run as Administrator.
  • Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.
Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

If you still have problems run in safe mode

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

now install an antivirus

download this AV till we clean the computer

It worked! My combofix log is attached, and the computer seems to be behaving better. I'm no longer being redirected to phony websites.

Hi cswolf4918

extra combofix report

I need to see one of the extra reports combofix makes
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box
CODE
C:\qoobox\ComboFix2.txt
  • click ok
  • copy and paste the report into this topic for me to review

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
DirLook::
c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\ngqbiormg
c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\htaisjyll

RenV::
c:\program files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\acrotray .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5\adobeupdater .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\nerocheck .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\nmbgmonitor .exe
c:\program files\iTunes\ituneshelper .exe
c:\program files\ltmoh\ltmoh .exe
c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe

RegLock::
[HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\User Preferences]

Registry::
[HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\User Preferences]
"88D7D0879DAB32E14DE5B3A805A34F98AFF34F5977"=-
"2D53CFFC5C1A3DD2E97B7979AC2A92BD59BC839E81"=-

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

NOTE**
  • When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will upload files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

ComboFix2 log below. I ran the script you provided, but it didn't behave like you described. When it finished scanning, Combofix restarted the computer, and upon restart generated the attached log. No dialog/message box ever popped up and i don't believe anything got uploaded. The computer had been running fine, but now I'm only able to boot in safe mode. when i try to boot normally, the windows logo screen comes, a "blue screen of death" flashes momentarily, and the computer restarts itself. I've also been getting the "internet explorer is not set as your default browser..." dialog box. i keep clicking yes, but it keeps coming back. I really appreciate your effort so far; I think we're getting close!!!

That doesn't work for me either. The only way i can get windows to boot normally is to first boot to safe mode and then do a normal restart.....and even that doesn't always work. My Norton Antivirus is picking up a TidServ!inf infection. It's saying it requires a manual removal, but its removal instructions say to update Norton virus definitions and run a full scan. I do that and it still says it requires a manual removal. Not sure what to do, or if this could be causing my boot-up problems.

greetings

I want you to disable norton while in safe mode and try to go back into normal mode, I am thinking it is norton taking out a file.

That doesn't seem to have any affect. The last time i booted in safe mode a dialog box popped up saying something along the lines of "Your system has recovered from a serious error..." The dialog wouldn't go away until i clicked "Send Report". I was then directed to a Microsoft website describing the problem as likely driver related. I wish i'd saved the page, but didn't. Any suggestions?
