Hello -

Having increasing worrisome issue with PWS:Win32/Daurso.A virus. Windows Defender catches it early on, I hit "Remove All", but then when I reboot, it returns. Have tried MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Norman, but none have eliminated it. Also completely emptied Temp folders, which I originally thought had worked, but unfortunately did not. So I am stuck waiting for Windows Defender to catch it each time I boot up. Unfortunately, I can't attach a GMER log file, as when I ran GMER, after about 10-15 minutes, a blue screen would show up very briefly saying "Page Fault" and then the computer would shut down and restart. Tried GMER twice, both times this occurred. DDS log below, please help - thanks:

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:

Hi Myrti -

Thanks for helping me. Per my original message, it appears I've been infected with PWS:Win32/Daurso.A virus. Windows Defender catches it early on after I've booted up, I hit "Remove All", and then it goes away. Unfortunately, when I reboot, it returns. I've updated and been running MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware the last couple of days to see if there was anything else, along with clearing all of my temp folders. The anti-malware programs seem to catch a few temp files that are infected, and one of them did catch a rootkit problem, but as recently as today, I am still getting the same Windows Defender pop-up telling me the virus is still in the computer. Fortunately, operations of the computer have not really been affected yet, but I figure it won't last forever.

In addition, when booting up, I get an error message mentioning that the computer can't find dfrgonui.dll - have had that since I was infected a few months ago with one of those fake antivirus programs that hold your computer hostage. MalwareBytes got rid of that problem, but since then, I've had that popup error message each time I've booted up. Would love to get rid of it.

Per your request, here is the OTL and Extras logs.

Hi,

can you please tell me where Windows Defender finds Daurso? Which file?

Please also try running gmer without the option devices checked.

Hi Myrti -

Windows Defender doesn't specify where it is located and not sure how to find the specific file destination from where it was caught (went into history, did not give a file path). Did not receive the pop-up from Defender today, so not sure if it is gone or still lurking in the computer.

In addition, ran a GMER without clicking the option devices per your instruction. Scanned over an hour, and then got blue-screened and rebooted. Tried to open again, and again got rebooted. Gave up at that point. I've attached what I received at the very beginning before doing the custom scan - FYI, I believe the wovgegi file at the bottom came up in a malware search a couple of days ago and I thought I had deleted it.

Here are a couple of programs/paths through Windows Defender that were permitted in the last few days, although don't remember actually granting them permission (thanks again for your help):

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

--

C:\Windows\tasks\moubmrtm
--

regkey:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\ugrdrfob

file:
C:\Users\AppData\Local\Temp\ugrdrfob.sys

--
regkey:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\qhypp

file:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\jocqsqu.sys

--

(file I attached as "GMER log" didn't seem to show up as attachment - if you don't see it, let me know)

Hi,

the gmer log is not showing. Could you just post it in your reply or is it to long?

Please run a scan with RootRepeal as well:
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract the contents of RootRepeal.zip, to your desktop.
  • Double click on your desktop.
  • Click on the report tab, then click scan
  • Check all seven boxes:
    Drivers
    Files
    Processes
    SSDT
    Stealth Objects
    Hidden Services
    Shadow SSDT
  • Click Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, Click the Save Report button. Save the log as RootRepeal.txt and post it in your next reply.

Hi Myrti -

Ran RootRepeal - it got stuck when searching c:\Windows\Winsxs\Manifests, but I managed to get most of what you'd be looking for. I've attached RootRepeal.txt to this reply. Below is GMER log you requested that for some reason wouldn't save as attachment - I apologize if this looks jumbled.

No popup of Daurso under Defender today as well - McAfee ran its weekly scan today and found 1 trojan in a temp file. Notably, this wovgegi file pops up under all searches.

Hi,

ok, lets take care of that wovgegi file then.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Hi,

please run the following script:
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

CODE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/317195/infected-by-pwswin32daursoa/
Collect::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\wovgegi.sys
driver::
wovgegi
folder::
c:\users\Garrett\AppData\Local\lqgpskelq

Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

Hi,

can you please run esage Bootkit_remover:

Download the file here: http://www.esagelab.com/files/bootkit_remover.rar
Extract the file onto a folder in your Desktop. If you do not have a program to extract the files, please download and install 7-zip: 7-zip
Then open the folder and double-click on remove.exe

A black window will open, let me know if it says it found any modifications.

OK, ran bootkit_remover, here's what it says:

Size Device Name MBR Status
149 GB \\.\Physical Drive.0 OK (DOS/Win32 Boot code found)

Just as an FYI though, when I searched my folders and went through windows\system32\drivers, the wovgegi.sys file is still there on my computer, and says it was last modified on 5/26/10.

Hi,

yes I am aware of that. However it is resisting deletion. Since you can see the file could you please try to upload it to virustotal:

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the file

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

OK, did Jotti scan, here's what it came up with:

File size: 741376 bytes
Filetype: Unknown
MD5: 73e2cd0e5f481ab322348ca02b2358d8
SHA1: e718dc61fa1e23c2f143c01dd12e0c2c2e8ef7cb

[Avira AntiVir]
2010-05-28 TR/Trash.Gen

[Sophos]
