IBM made for Lenovo ThinkPad Portable 80GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

My IBM made for Lenovo ThinkPad Portable 80GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive does not work. The laptop seems to detect it but wont enage it so i can not acess my saved data. When i trouble shoot it using windows, i uninstall and reinstall it but it still wont work. A yellow exclamation mark remains beside the device icon in the device manager. And when i click on its properties under device statues is says: This device cannot start. (Code 10).

does anyone have any suggestions as to this problem.

Try the drive on a different system.

That should dictate further conclusions.
