About a week ago, This really annoying virus has suddenly appeared. I've tried running a McAfee scan, Malwarebytes scan and A Spybot S&D scan but nothing has showed up. I know it's not my touchpad because I plugged in a USB mouse as well and had the same problem.

The virus causes the mouse to click by itself, but it doesn't seem to move around by its own accord. When I scroll across the screen it may click randomly and click any buttons that it goes near. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows Vista. I've never really had a problem with the computer apart from one time when I needed to reinstall Windows, I can't remember why...

I have Hijackthis and here is a logfile, hope it helps...

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Hi,

the problem you describe with your mouse doesn't sound very much like malware. Have you tried using a different mouse? Does the problem persist?

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either PCTools or McAfee.

I also notice the presence of RegistryMechanic Registry Cleaner on your pc.

I don't personally recommend the use of ANY registry cleaners.
Here is an excerpt from a discussion on regcleaners
QUOTE
Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

Thanks for the tips,

I have tried to insert another mouse, it behaves in a similar way, the mouse clicking by itself.
I'll take your advice and remove some of the anti-virus software.

From what I have found it seems to be either some malware or the file that runs the mouse may have corrupted.
Is it possible to replace this file with a new one without damaging the computer or having to go to a dodgy website
which may make the problem worse?

Hi, forgot to mention in the previous post

The effects of the mouse going crazy isn't constant,
Some days the mouse will be affected, other days I can go as usual,
I don't tend to use the computer any more because I don't want to risk losing any work
as it sometimes deletes text.

Hi,

is this a wireless mouse? I've seen that happen when two mouse of the same type are used together in a small distance.
You should be able to reinstall the driver without much issue. Did the mouse come with a CD?

Sorry its taken a while to post a reply, My second computer lost internet for a while,
I got it back eventually, wasnt the computer, the signalcut for some wire to be replaced

Anyway, here are some details to help,

* The laptop touchpad doesn't work, and the mouse clicks more often than it should, even with no imput from me
* I plugged in a USB laser mouse (With Wire) and I encountered the same problem
* These two observations lead me to believe the hardware is not the problem, but the driver file which supports it
* I have also tried an old USB ball mouse, no success
* Seriously plays up when a Java operated file is run

* I no longer have a reinstall disk for Vista, It got lost several months ago and I have been unable to find it
(How do I get a reinstall disk, From Dell?)

Some things I have tried to fix it

* Uninstall driver using MSConfig, and let it reinstall itself, No success

Apart from that, the computer has stayed unchanged since I last posted a Log, Updates have been turned off
Thanks for your help so far,

Struan,

Hi,

regarding your backup CD have a look here: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/glo...n/backupcd_form

Is this working for you?

Are you experiencing the same problem in safe mode? Did you try to uninstall the mouse before installing a different one?

Hello,

Sorry It's been a while since my last post, I've been having problems as my second computer has had problems,

I have found the Restore Disk for my computer and I have run it, but I still have the same problems,
This leads me to beleive that it is a hardware problem, Not sure how though because any mouse I plug in (I've tried ball and lazer),
behaves in a similar way, Is there a specific part of the computer which controls the mouses, either hardware or software, and is it possible to replace it?

Thanks for yout patience,

Struanmcd

Hi,

I'm sorry but that question is out of my league, I'm not familiar with hardware.

I would suggest that you post in the hardware section here at bleepingcomputer and ask for help there. They might be able to answer your question.
