Whenever I click on links after doing a Google search, whether using IE or Firefox, I get redirected to various random ad sites. AdAware found one thing and removed it, but the problem remained.

Thanks in advance for any help I can get!

Hi upstairs, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Firstly,
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Secondly,
Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • In the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) paste the following in bold:

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two Notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Thirdly,
Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi again upstairs!!... smile.gif.

That looks much better!.. Does any problem persist??..

Is your Symantec antivirus up-to date??.. I see it was installed long time ago, and I really doubt it has the latest virus definitions installed...
If it's outdated, and this is not a company owned computer, I highly recommend you uninstall it and install another antivirus program of your choice, run a full system scan with it, and post a log (if possible)... You may want to install one of the antivirus applications I recommend on my site: link

Please do the following:

Firstly,
Please run OTL.exe.
  • Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :OTL
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [] File not found
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [bascstray] File not found
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem : Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - Reg Error: Key error. File not found
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]

  • Return to OTL.exe, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Run Fix button.
  • A fix log in Notepad will appear. Copy the contents of the fix log to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTL.exe
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Secondly,
We need to update outdated programs (with security vulnerabilities) on your machine:

- Adobe Acrobat Reader:

You're using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your PC open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here (uninstall version 7.0 first):
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

- Java

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Then,
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, your Language, check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

- Mozilla Firefox (3.5.9):
Help --> Check for updates - update to the latest version: 3.6.3

Thirdly,
Please scan your computer with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Hi again upstairs!!.. smile.gif..

That looks good!.. You didn't tell me if any problem persists, if your Symantec antivirus is up to date and if you updated outdated programs on your machine... I realise that it was due to you being busy (going to work, for example)... Let me know once you have more time!..

If there are no more problems, please do the following:

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
Double click OTL.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

Then,
Please, set up a new System Restore point:

Turn off System Restore

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Select the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

The to turn it back on
1. Wait for Windows to finish clearing Restore Points.
2. Clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.

Thanks, snemelk!

I have not attempted to get online other than bleepingcomputer since my first post. I will see what happens when I get a chance.

The computer is an older laptop that was my wife's work computer. So, we sort of inherited it when her office got new computers. Therefore, Symantec is surely out of date. The problem is that it requires a password to uninstall. I am working on trying to get the password from her tech guy at work. If he is not able to give it to us, what would you suggest? Could I download a new program and override Symantec?

I'll keep you posted and follow the instructions of your last post.

Thanks again!

Yes, please do so - it's important... Your logs look ok, but I need to know if there are any remaining issues, like browser (or search engine) redirects...

I think the password may be just: symantec, at least this is what they say in this guide: Uninstalling Symantec Anti-virus - if manual removal doesn't work, use an advanced method...
If it works, install another antivirus of your choice...

Let me know how it goes...

So, "symantec" worked as the password to uninstall it! Thank you much!

I then downloaded and scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials and it turned up no threats.

I have been using the computer and have not noticed anything out of the ordinary.

I plan on following the rest of your directions with regards to cleaning up and will post again when finished.

I updated Java and Adobe, cleaned up everything, did a system restore, updated the service pack to 3, added Online Armor, performed a Disk Clean and Defrag, updated IE and Firefox, and everything seems to be running fine.

I had the setting on automatic update, so I was confused about why my service pack wasn't already up-to-date. Ultimately, I updated it by clicking on the download button on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

Was that the correct decision? It took about three hours to install, and I wonder if it was an unnecessarily huge install for this computer. But, it apparently downloaded correctly.
