Google collecting wifi data?

Google was reportedly collecting wifi data using there street view cars: http://www.pcworld.com/article/196397/goog..._thinking.html/ what were they doing with it anyway?

You might already know this but the answer to your question is mentioned in the article, apparently Google used a package of code made by an engineer in 2006 but they didn't realize there was a stray (and supposedly experimental) line of code that collected some.. private bits.
