I was able to remove some malware using Spybot and MalWareBytes, but I am still having some lingering issues.

1.) Unless I click the IE or Firefox start buttons right after my computer loads, the programs won't load up. In addition if I get them to start and then close down the programs I can't get them to restart.

2.) Search results are being redirected.

I attempted to follow all steps outlined in the Prep Post, but the DDS.scr file would not generate. So I ran RSIT and pasted the results below. When I ran the program I had firefox windows open - I was worried if I closed them I wouldn't be able to restart them.

Any assistance would be appreciated. GMER file will be posted after you ask for a rerun (usually seem to like to get the most up to date version.)

Regards,
Andrew

Reinstalled Norton 360, updated, ran checks, found a couple items and removed them. Problem appears to be gone.

-Acer290

May 15, 2010 12:48 PM EDST.

Ok, so computer is working much better now with Norton, except Norton found a backdoor virus that it states needs to be removed manually. I wanted to get some feedback before just attempting to delete the driver file it is indicating:

Norton is telling me:
File: atapi.sys (Backdoor.Tidserv!inf)
Infected File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys
Automatically Run Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\i8042prt.sys

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. Please also continue to work with me until I give you the all clear. Even if your computer appears to act better, you may still be infected.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.

Once we start working together, please reply back within 3 days or this thread may be closed so we can help others who are waiting.

We need to create an OTL report,
  • Please download OTL from this link.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    netsvcs
    msconfig
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button.
  • The scan should take a few minutes.
  • Please copy and paste both logs in your reply.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new OTL log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

In your reply, please post both OTL logs and the GMER log.

Hey etavares,
Thanks for responding. Let me know if require a DDS file as well. After I ran Norton I was able to run DDS.

I have only attached the OTL file. AT this point GMER has been running for almost 3 hours. I have to stop it at this point because I'm in a location where I can't wait for it to finish. So I will run it overnight and post it once it completes. I'm assuming it is taking so long because I have a lot of files on my system.

ok, the GMER log will help a lot. if it doesn't complete, try in safe mode with everything checked except 'devices'. if that doesn't work, run in safe mode and only check 'files' and 'sections'.

Ok, I reran GMER, but did not include "Files." I realize this part is important, but it is the part that is taking so long so I was hoping you might be able to use everything else while the full scan runs and includes the 'Files' part.

Regards.

GMER completed, but then gave a whole bunch of "unable to write" errors and the data was lost. I will be running it again shortly with the hope it will be savable in the morning.

Hello, acer290.

Were you able to get GMER to finish? Please post the log. We can continue on, but we may need to revisit GMER later if you couldn't get it to run.

Registry Cleaner Warning

I also see that you have a registry cleaner installed (in your case CCleaner). Here at BC, we do not recommend using registry cleaners.

See here for more information:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1326578

Step 1

Next, please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop as acer290CF.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on acer290CF.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply, along with any symptoms that are present after it runs.

Gmer failed. I'm trying it in safe mode now with 'Devices' unchecked. It should be finished soon - it has been running for about 3 hours. If it doesn't work this time I will follow the directions from your last post.

GMER crashed after trying to run again. Then I switched to safe mode and unchecked 'Devices.' That file is attached (took 6 hours to run, yikes!).

For ComboFix the only problem is that while trying to run it in safemode I can't turn off the Norton Realtime Scanner. I will attempt to switch back to regular mode and run it then.

OK, better to run it in normal mode anyway. We can kill Norton if we have to, just let me know if you're able to scan in normal mode.

Hello, acer290.

Ok, some more stuff to do. How is it running now?

Save this as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

Step 2

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

c:\windows\system32\chartray.dll

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Hello, acer290.

Ok, some more stuff to do. How is it running now?

Step 1

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\appcertdlls]

Rootkit::
c:\windows\system32\chartray.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Latest step complete and attached. Still can't find that hidden file.

Computer working fine, just no idea if that trojan that Norton identified still exists.
