Hi,

I would be really grateful if someone could kindly offer some assistance with cleaning my computer up please.

I seem to have a problem with web pages being redirected. For instance, if I do a Google search for a subject, the displayed sites are all from the US despite specifically searching for UK sites.
When I try to open many different websites following a Google search, the intended page doesn't open but my browser instantly redirects to a non-relevant page, usually some advertising page.
A further problem is that something is now preventing me from updating Windows. I select Windows Update as normal, but the page never opens. Previous to becoming infected, there was no problem with updating.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi myrti,

Thank you for getting back to me and thank you for your time.

The problems I am having are the following:

1) After doing a Google search and clicking on the results, sometimes the correct page will open ok, but often the page is immediately redirected to a non-relevant page. If I immediately close the page and try again, sometimes the correct page will open, but sometimes it won't and the pages get continuously redirected.

2) After doing a Google search specifically for UK websites, the results are often for US sites.

3) Something is stopping me from doing a Window's Update, the page fails to load.

4) When I select Run-msconfig-Startup. There appears to be programs that shouldn't be there and that should be removed, according to one of your articles in the Tutorials section. I havn't removed or disabled anything because of this. I thought it best to wait and get your advice on how to proceed.

I havn't taken any steps to try and repair things since my initial post and scans yesterday. Prior to that, I've just updated AVG as normal. Tried installing and running AdAware but it won't update and only scans for 15 sections before aborting.
I downloaded a program called PrevX but that didn't find or solve anything. I run CCleaner on a fairly regular basis.
Other than the steps above I havn't tried any other methods to solve the problems I'm having.

Please find enclosed, my OTL scan results, as requested.

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi myrti,

That sounds like I have a very nasty problem. I will change passwords and inform my bank as instructed.
Out of interest, what is the trojan that I've been infected with called and are there any details about it, i.e. what it is, what it does, etc.etc?

I will reformate my computer at the earliest oppurtunity but in the meantime I'd be very grateful if you could continue helping me with ridding my computer of the problems.

Please find enclosed my ComboFix scan report:

Hi,

you have been infected with TDL3, which currently is a very common rootkit. more about tdl3

Please try to run the following script with ComboFix:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
TDL::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\nvatabus.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

regards myrti
