When it freezes is it a black screen, the Sony splash screen, or the XP slpash screen ? This will help tell what is freezing.

Would you mind posting the model number?

Also, have you added anything to this computer that did not come with it (RAM, video card, ect...)?

you may want to try going here http://www.memtest86.com/ , download the iso or the floppy version. the tricky part will be to get it to boot to either cd (iso image) or your floppy if you are having boot issues. when (hopefully if) you can boot to this memory diagnostic test, if you see even 1 bad memory address you need to replace your ram, the test can take a while depending on speed and size of your memory.
good luck

While booting press the F8 key to get into the boot menu. Select Safe Mode if you can get to the menu.
By the way, which operating system are you using? '98, ME, XP?
How much memory?
What processor? Intel or AMD? What speed? P-200, P-III 500, P-4 1.5ghz. Athlon or Duron?
The model number not the serial number. Usually on the front of the case.
