Our ISP has an agreement with Norton to provide security software (changed from McAfee). My husband deleted the McAfee, but is not able to get to the Norton symantec website through our ISP (Comcast). The message displayed after about 5-30 seconds is "IE cannot display the webpage" or "Server not found Firefox can't find the server at ssae.symantec.com." I verified SSL and TLS protocols are enabled, as it's an https. This same thing happens if we try to go to the Norton website directly or Kaspersky and a few others. (The computer can not get to the Windows website either.)

After searching through help sites, someone had responded to a request, saying to go through Task Mgr and end svchost.exe files but try to leave the ones open your computer actually needs. I tried this. It did enable me to get to these websites for a couple of minutes, then the svchost.exe would start running again. There were around 8 of them, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it is when you can close the wrong one and have to start again from an auto close and restart. It was impossible for me to download Norton before whatever it is started running again and shut off the website again. Each time I could still go to other websites, just not those listed above. (There may be others, but these are the ones I tried.)

I ran Defogger and disabled the CD emulation drivers. I ran the DDS tool. I wasn't able to save it to my desktop and had to search for the .txt files. Only found the dds.txt file in temporary files. There isn't one named attach.txt anywhere in my c: drive. Here's the dds.txt file:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

please run a scan with ComboFix next:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

please run the following script:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost]
okogrp=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

how is your PC doing?

regards myrti

Hi,

if you want to use Norton, please install the program now, so it can protect you.

Please download SystemLook from jpshortstuff and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click the SystemLook and copy/paste the following into the box
    CODE
    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost] /sub
  • Hit the Look button. Let it finish the scan
  • A log will then pop-up to your Desktop.. Post the content of the log here in your next reply
