I've been using MSWord for >15-yrs and want to try alternatives.

The one feature I need: to be able to place a button on a toolbar for hidden text. Works identically to bold, underline, italic, other font-formatting buttons: select text, click button. And to show/hide hidden text, you just toggle the "Nonprinting characters" button.

I tried OO-Writer--can't do it.
I tried Abiword--can't do it.
I emailed owners of Atlantis--they say Atlantis can't do it.

This is amazing to me--funny. A seemingly minor feature that I can't find outside Word. I use hidden text extensively; many translators, localizers, editors, etc rely on hidden text--and the ability to apply it with a single mouse click.

Can anyone recommend a WP program that's not too expensive that supports hidden text and includes the ability to add custom hidden-text button to toolbar? I assume Word Perfect can do this, correct? But I'd prefer free/shareware.

Thanks for tips.

"OpenOffice Word Processor will toggle non printing characters but i don't know what you mean by hidden text?"

In a Word or OO-Writer test doc, select a sentence or two, then go to the font formatting dialog box [whatever its exact name--see Format menu]. You can choose font style, size, colors, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, etc. You'll also see Hidden. Click the Hidden chk box, click OK.

Toggle the Show/Hide button, to show/hide the hidden text.

Writers, editors, localizers, translators, many people use this feature. Often the the user colors hidden text red or blue to make it easy to see when displayed.

Just tried another WP pgm--again, no hidden text, but a very nice pgm, esp for the many users who don't need ~90% of Word's features:
