Posted 11 May 2010 - 04:01 AM

On the 5/5/10 whilst using IE8 my McAfee AV started to go wild. Shortly after this I got pop-up notifications from Windows telling me that a number of .exe had ended unexpectedly. Then suddenly my McAfee was disabled and my computer started to either download or upload to the internet. I rapidly tried to disconnect the internet by right clicking on the icon at the bottom right, but this did nothing. I then went and switched off the wireless router. Next I ran a full McAfee scan, which found nothing. Then I went back on line and tried various scans. ESET would not work (I couldn't click on the online scan), nor would Bitdefender or McAfee online scan. I tried to contact McAfee online but again found that the buttons were disabled. Then McAfee AV would only open to a white screen, I couldn't even remove it from the program list in control panel. System restore was disabled (by group setting), and a couple of times Windows failed to load properly. I then changed to Firefox and was then able to run the ESET scan and download Malwarebyte. These found a number of Trojans and this restored many of the functions and stopped the .exe errors. However, things are still not right. I have now changed McAfee for ESET, but am regularly getting a something blocked by ESET from the same source 85.12.46.159. I am also still suspicious about my internet connection, but I might just be paranoid now. It seems to have little runs of activity that I can't account for. I used TCPview to try and check this out and found that there seemed to be a number of odd connections to private individuals in London, Netherlands and Russia.

I have run and re-run ESET and Malwarebyte with constantly updated signature libraries, but still think there might be something lurking. Sometimes the scans are clean, then they pop up with new things again.

This is my last ESET scan:

Hi Mole,

Thanks for answering my post. I am still having trouble with my computer. The MS malicious software removal tool has told me that I'm infected with win32/alureon.H - from what I've read this would certainly seem to explain some of what has been going on.

I have only let that piece of software have a go at removing it - which it couldn't. The only other things I've done in the meantime is run HJT (log only). It is 07.45 local time here and I'm off to work now, and won't be back until quite late, but I assume that you will at least want an uptodate DDS and GMER log.

Again, many thanks for taking the time to give me your expert help - much appreciated.

Rob.

Oh and one other thing... I am unable to update Windows (i.e. security patches) as the page is blocked in Firefox and IE8 - it tells me there is a connection problem - but I can access everything else.

A rootkit certainly looks likely. With the MS tool our only clue we will run Combofix and see whether it's there.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Let's rerun Combofix and pick up a few other things off. smile.gif

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

CODE
File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\mponjosv.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\vdpgmobo.sys
c:\windows\System32\Drivers\sdewbppg.sys

c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
c:\program files\Sony Ericsson\Sony Ericsson PC Suite\sepcsuite .exe

Driver::
sdewbppg

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

I'm off to bed, but will leave Malwarebytes scanning in meantime,

Cheers,

Hi Mole,

Sorry, we must have cross posted last night. I followed your instructions, but when combofix loaded it told me there was an updated version and did I want to update. I said 'yes', but I'm not sure if this then removed the script that I had copied into it. Also combofix re-booted, but the machine hung whilst trying to save settings and I had to eventually push the reset button. Anyway, here is the log.

Actually it does say in the log that it ran with CFScript.txt (with an extra .txt added by me - doh!)

Also ESET does kick back in after combofix reboots and this morning it had these findings to report:

14/05/2010 01:59:03 Real-time file system protection file C:\System Volume Information\_restore{695C4667-51BA-487A-9017-75037171B5C0}\RP13\A0007292.sys Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined STUDY-DESKTOP\Robert Porter Event occurred during an attempt to access the file by the application: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe.
14/05/2010 00:51:08 Real-time file system protection file C:\DOCUME~1\ROBERT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Av-test.txt Eicar test file cleaned by deleting - quarantined STUDY-DESKTOP\Robert Porter Event occurred on a new file created by the application: C:\Comfix\CF1471.cfxxe.
14/05/2010 00:51:06 Real-time file system protection file C:\QooBox\32788R22FWJFW\ipsec.sys Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined STUDY-DESKTOP\Robert Porter Event occurred during an attempt to access the file by the application: C:\Comfix\PEV.cfxxe.

Malwarebytes found nothing.

Take care,

Rob.

Hi Mole,

Things seem to be much smoother - I can access Windows update, I'm not getting the same ESET blocks.

There are a couple of things... ESET has pulled these up, but I think they are combofix files and restore points - is that about right?

14/05/2010 01:59:03 Real-time file system protection file C:\System Volume Information\_restore{695C4667-51BA-487A-9017-75037171B5C0}\RP13\A0007292.sys Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined STUDY-DESKTOP\Robert Porter Event occurred during an attempt to access the file by the application: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe.
14/05/2010 00:51:08 Real-time file system protection file C:\DOCUME~1\ROBERT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Av-test.txt Eicar test file cleaned by deleting - quarantined STUDY-DESKTOP\Robert Porter Event occurred on a new file created by the application: C:\Comfix\CF1471.cfxxe.
14/05/2010 00:51:06 Real-time file system protection file C:\QooBox\32788R22FWJFW\ipsec.sys Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined STUDY-DESKTOP\Robert Porter Event occurred during an attempt to access the file by the application: C:\Comfix\PEV.cfxxe.

Also Spydoctor is telling me that I have trojan.downloader.murlo with 23 instances in registry values and keys - however I'm not sure how much I believe this program as it wants me to buy it to delete internet cookies!

I have run a complete ESET (updated) and Malwarebytes (updated) scan and both come up clean, and everything feels like it is running smoothly.

Do I need to do anything to my system restore points or has combofix dealt with those?

Once again, thank you so much for your time and efforts on my behalf, it really is greatly appreciated.

Rob.

Ignore Spydoctor.

You are right that the ESET scan is finding system restore and quarantined stuff. There's also an infected file which has been removed.

Let's clear up...during which a system restore will be carried out.

You're clean. Good stuff! thumbup2.gif

Let's do some clearing up

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
(For Vista/Windows 7 please click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run)
  • Now type in Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between "Combofix" and "/")
  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • You will then receive a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.
This will uninstall Combofix and anything associated with it.

Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's some advice on how you can keep your PC clean

Update your AntiVirus Software

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. If you use a commercial antivirus program you must make sure you keep renewing your subscription. Otherwise, once your subscription runs out, you may not be able to update the programs virus definitions.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Install an AntiSpyware Program

A highly recommended AntiSpyware program is SuperAntiSpyware. You can download the free Home Version. or the Pro version for a 15 day trial period.

Installing this or another recommended program will provide spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with an AntiSpyware program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Finally, here's a treasure trove of antivirus, antimalware and antispyware resources

That's it Rob19, happy surfing!

Cheers.
