Experiencing the problems posted here and recopied below:

Norton Internet Security gave me a message several days ago saying that it blocked trojan.fakeav. Yesterday I used my browsers (FF and Chrome) for an hour or so, closed them both, and then when attempting to reopen Chrome only minutes later it got stuck and wouldn't open any pages, and FF started giving me random google redirects. I was familiar with the signs, since two months ago I had tidserv and cleaned it with TDSSkiller supplied here on the site and was symptom free. Today as soon as the redirects started happening I restarted my computer in safe mode, ran Malware (found nothing) and Norton which found tidserv. I ran TDSSkiller since I still had that saved, but it didn't resolve the problem.

Below is my DDS.txt contents, and attached is attach.txt. I attempted to run GMER but after it ran for three hours and was consuming lots of resources but didn't seem to be doing anything I force quit it. Is it supposed to take that long? I restarted my computer after the force quit and tried to run GMER again but it just gave me an error and windows shut it down.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

please try running a scan with gmer next:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

regards myrti

I tried running the scan in regular mode, and like the other day got a windows error window and had to quit the program. I had to manually shut down the computer, so I restarted the computer in safe mode and tried to run GMER again, but only a few minutes into the scan I got a BSOD.

It ran with that setting log below. Still had to manually restart the computer after saving the log though. Also Microsoft's Malicious Software remover for May was released and ran yesterday on my PC and it found a problem with WIN32/Alureon.H and while digging through Norton's logs the reference it had to Tidserv!inf said the associated affected file was C:\windows\system32\drivers\appdrv.sys and a browser cache. Both programs said they could not fully delete the threat though so my symptoms persist. Thought the information might help though. Here's the gmer log:

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Hi,

please run the following script with ComboFix:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
TDL::
C:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

regards myrti

When Combofix restarted the computer it gave me a BSOD so I had to restart with last known good configuration. Not sure if that will have had an effect on the scan, but here's the log:

Hi,

it seems that didn't work.

We need to replace the file in Recovery Console:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
  3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
  4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
  5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
    cd system32\drivers
  6. At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

    ren atapi.sys atapi.bad

  7. At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

    copy c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\atapi.sys atapi.sys

  8. The command should then show 1 file(s) copied.
  9. At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

    exit
Windows will now begin loading. Let me know if the redirects and detections continue.

Redirects seems to be gone after replacing atapi.sys in Recovery Console. But Norton still pops up with the message about an intrusion by tidserv and Chrome still is opening but doesn't load.

Hi,

could you tell me where Norton is finding tidserv? Could you please also try to reinstall Chrome and let me know if you can use it then.

Tidserv has alternately tried to attack chrome.exe, firefox.exe and svchost.exe all of which Norton says it has blocked. Also, in my Unresolved threats list it shows tidserv detected in appdrv.sys and a browser cache (though it neglects to mention which browser or a path) as previously mentioned. Reinstalling Chrome doesn't solve the problem.
