You guys helped me out before and everything was fine for about 4 months and then someone who shall remain nameless in my household clicked on one of those You have won....popups. Now incensant popups from Icannews etc are slowing bootup and preventing internet access. I couldn't download new versions of McAfee Virusscan or updates to Adaware. Here is the HJT log...

Please download L2m9xfix
  • Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files into a folder on your desktop.
  • Please start your computer in Safe Mode using one of the following methods.
    • Turn the computer on
    • As the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu appears. (This also works with the F8 key following the same steps)
    • Choose Safe mode from the startup menu
    • Press Enter
    • Windows starts in Safe mode.
    • Restart your computer when finished troubleshooting
    OR
    • Close all open programs.
    • Click Star > Run when the Run dialog box appears type 'msconfig' (without the quotes)
    • Click OK.
    • The System Configuration Utility opens: [list=a]
    • Click "Advanced."
    • Put a check mark beside 'Enable Startup Menu'
    • Click OK, then click OK again
    • Restart the computer when prompted
    • The computer will restart in Safe mode.
    • When you are finished troubleshooting repeat steps a- e.
    • In step f, uncheck "Enable Start up Menu."
  • Close all programs
  • Restart the computer
  • Open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat
  • A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.
  • Please restart your computer.
  • Please post a new HijackThis log and the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

Dear Suebaby,

Thank you for your help. The logs are below. After running L2m9xfix, I noticed an improvement although things are still running slow. P.C. resumed communicating with the printer though.

We need to get rid of the Qoologic trojan.

Create a new Folder on Desktop. Name that Folder QOOLOGIC
  • Please download Findqoologic into the new Folder and then unzip it into the new Folder.
  • Once unzipped, open the Folder and Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it.
  • Wait until a text file opens, post it in a reply to your thread.

Sorry, SueBaby, I can't get Findqoologic to work. I tried downloading it from your link, but I kept getting sent to the Invision Powerboard, with no further instructions as to how to find that file. Downloaded it from another source, but still couldn't get it to work...I keep getting error messages like bad command or file name, or file creation error.

Try this method.

Please download QooFix9x and save it to your desktop. Do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click QooFix9x.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the QooFix9x folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. If you get a warning about running MS-DOS programs in Safe Mode, please just click OK to continue. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the QooFix9x folder.

You may want to print out this page. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Use 'ctrl' + 'alt' + 'del' (Three keys together) to get task manager. Find these processes and 'end task' them.
OR]
Use the process viewer in Hijackthis, Open the Misc Tools Section then Open Process Manager, find these programs and “kill process” the following running processes (Do not worry if they are not there.)

YourMonitor.exe

ms03843238592.exe

sys02284323859.exe

Sys98.exe

Now we will address the HijackThis fixes.

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ms03843238592] C:\WINDOWS\ms03843238592.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sys02284323859] C:\WINDOWS\sys02284323859.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [YourMonitor] C:\WINDOWS\YOURMONITOR

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [YourMonitor] C:\WINDOWS\YourMonitor.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sys98] C:\WINDOWS\Sys98.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.

Reboot to safe mode. If you don’t know how to boot in safe mode, there is a tutorial HERE .
NOTE: To avoid the risk of any of the files or folders not being found due to their having the 'Hidden' attribute, first make sure that in Folder Options > View hidden and operating system files are set to show:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Or items 8 & 9 from this link :
http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files and DELETE them (Do not worry if they are not there.):[/b]

C:\WINDOWS\ms03843238592.exe

C:\WINDOWS\\sys02284323859.exe

C:\WINDOWS\\YOURMONITOR

C:\WINDOWS\\YourMonitor.exe

C:\WINDOWS\\Sys98.exe

Please run HijackThis again and post a fresh log so I can make sure that all the malware was deleted according to plan

Your log appears to be clean. Please advise me of any problems you still have.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to disable and enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore

    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use IE-SPYAD Install IE SPYAD. Add another level of protection to your Internet Explorer browser by blocking certain sites that are known to contain malware. IE SPYAD puts several thousand sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. • Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok..

  • Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from HERE
  • Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Good luck!
