I am doing a malware removal prep b/c suspicious behavior (two (only) administrator accounts have lost their administration privileges and won't reset. I am following your prep guide and got as far as running dds.scr successfully. However, when I try to run gmer I get this error: "C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The system cannot find the file specified." Also the top 8 gmer scan options are grayed out. I captured a screenshot of this. What should I do about gmer?

Thanks for your help.

Further background:
This is my 14-yr old's cpu. I still use an XP system and have used its MMC to troubleshoot & fix problems. I'm fumbling with Windows 7 and finding fixes are not obvious. Of course, having been locked out of my administrator privileges there isn't much it will let me do.

Let me show you the disappearance of my administrator privileges. Best Buy set up this "Manager" account up when we bought the computer (was display model) and I've used it to install software, set up my son's user account, etc.
I am attaching 3 JPGS from Control Panel User accounts:

1) "User acct labeled as administrator.jpg"
This image shows that the "Manager" account is labeled "Administrator".

2) "User acct however is set as standard.jpg"
This image shows the account actually only has standard provileges.

3) "Setting User acct as administrator grayed out.jpg"
This image shows I am not allowed to change the account type to "Administrator".

I wasn't going to paste in the DDS.txt until I resolved the problem with gmer, but I changed my mind. I hope this reveals the problem(s)!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys
    adp3132.sys
    mv61xx.sys
    nvraid.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thank you.

In sum the most obvious problem is that both administrator accounts I had set up have lost their administrator privliledges even though they are labeled as administrator. (see screen shots from my earlier posts.) I don't use the second account; it's just there for an alternative in case something happened to the account I use (like this), but it is screwed up, too. I don't use this computer regularly so I don't know how long ago this happened.

I ran OTL and I'm pasting them below, but first let me add some other information I already determined.

The WINDOWS ACTION CENTER and NORTON UTILITIES found problems:

The WINDOWS ACTION CENTER in the Systray has two messages posted that I am not able/allowed to fix:
1) Security: Windows Update option
It suggests I select “Install updates automatically”. I’m sure I had this selected and that I never changed it. Even so it won’t turn the option on now when I try to select it.
2) Maintenance: Download and install driver update
“A new driver for your chipset is available. Go online to install the update.” However when I click on the link I get the following message:

This solution could not be downloaded
________________________________________
Most likely causes:
• Your computer was unable to download the solution at this time. Check to make sure your computer is connected to the Internet, and then try to download the solution again later.
It is connected to the internet!

And

NORTON UTILITIES may be reporting the same problem as # 2 above

Data Type Device Problem and Description
Device Type Coprocessor
Device Status Device drivers are not installed. (Code 28)
Plug and Play ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0AA3&SUBSYS_02BA1028&REV_B1\3&2411E6FE&1&1D

OK, here is the OTL report:

Hi,

the reason you can't change the account to administrator, is that it already is an administrator account. The image shows it to be an administrative account. The account type is given underneath the name.

gmer does not run on 64bit systems that is why you were having problems.

Do you have any problems beside the changed account type?

I know it says it's administrator, but it's not recognised when I try to do something like updates. I get messages saying I don't have permission and I need to switch to an administrator account or contact my system's administrator. Also, as I said before when I was using the Windows User Account manager, clicked on "change account settings" (opens the window with two options: administrator and standard) , the standard option is selected even though it was labeled administrator in the previous window, and it won't let me reselect administrator. As a test I tried to create a new administrator account yesterday and it wouldn't let me do it. It defaulted to standard.
Of course, I can't think off the top of my head (I'm tired) of the specific situations where a program or windows told me I didn't have permission to do something. I'll have to reconstruct them to provide details. I do recall being surprised when I discovered I could run an update when I was signed in on my son's standard account that I had been told I didn't have permission to do when I was signed on under my administrator account. I'll try to convince my son to let me keep it tomorrow so I can try to better document what I've been experiencing.

Does this mean the logs didn't reveal anything suspicous?

Hi,

no, there are a couple of things that seem off and we need to address. However I'm not sure that they are relevant for your administrator problem.

Did Malwarebytes find anything malicious? I see you ran it earlier?

First of all you have two anti virus programs installed:
I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Symantec or Zonealarm.

Then please run the following script with OTL:
Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    CODE
    :otl
    SRV - [2010/03/23 04:49:09 | 000,256,246 | ---- | M] () [Auto | Running] -- c:\Windows\SysWOW64\qlhayqkp\svcboot_abeatdg.dll -- (svcboot_abeatdg)
    MOD - [2010/03/23 04:49:07 | 002,063,028 | ---- | M] () -- c:\Windows\SysWOW64\qlhayqkp\mcsc_wiayevj.dll
    MOD - [2010/03/23 04:49:02 | 001,166,955 | ---- | M] () -- c:\Windows\SysWOW64\qlhayqkp\mcapp_xvkahbk.dll
    MOD - [2010/03/23 04:49:01 | 000,200,470 | ---- | M] () -- c:\Windows\SysWOW64\qlhayqkp\shim_ictvdwx.dll
    :files
    c:\Windows\SysWOW64\qlhayqkp
    C:\Windows\tasks\at*.job
    :commands
    [emptytemp]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, when done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
  • Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
================================Follow up scan=================================
  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

Hi,
I uninstalled ZoneAlarm a couple months ago before I installed Norton 360, so I was surprised when you said I was running two antivirus programs. I checked and ZoneAlarm is not listed under the Control Panel “Uninstall or change a program”. The only file remaining in the C:\Program Files\Checkpoint\ ZoneAlarm directory is a file “zllictbl.dat” which apparently has something to do with the license key. There are no other folders or files found when I search the hard drive. The OTL references are for missing files associated with ZoneAlarm’s toolbar. I wasn’t aware the ZA toolbar hadn’t been completely removed because it wasn’t enabled. It is listed as a toolbar under Internet Explorer tools, but it wasn’t selectable. I couldn’t find instructions for uninstalling the ZA tooIbar on ZoneAlarm.com or searching the web, but I was able to disable the add-in with Manage Add-ons after I un-clicked read-only on the ZoneAlarm directory (above).
I used regedit to search for registry keys associated with ZoneAlarm and I found a number for the ZA toolbar, ZAMailsafe and zlclient. I didn't delete them without asking you if it was okay, but it seems to be my only option to get rid of the references to ZoneAlarm in the log. I've had problems with ZoneAlarm leaving registry keys behind after an uninstall. Should I delete all the ZA related keys I can find before running the script you provided in OTL?

I installed the free Malwarebytes version last October. I thought it was running realtime because a splash screen comes up after boot-up, but I hadn’t purchased it so it only could do manual scans. the last time I ran it was January 24th. I just ran a quick scan and it found nothing

Hi,

the OTL script is independent of the ZoneAlarm issue.

Regarding ZoneAlarm try this:

1. Click on the Start menu.
2. Select Run...
3. Type wbemtest and click OK
4. Connect to root\SecurityCenter
5. Click on Query
6. Type in SELECT * FROM AntiVirusProduct and click on Apply

If there is more than one result, it means there is more than one Antivirus program installed. Double click on each result to view the properties for that Antivirus product. Identify the product(s) installed and DELETE any records for an Antivirus software that is no longer installed.

Please make a backup of the registry before making any changes:
Please follow steps 1-3 behind this link to backup your registry with ERUNT (use current date while naming the location).

This computer is running Windows 7 which is not listed for ERUNT.
"ERUNT (The Emergency Recovery Utility for NT) helps you perform a complete Registry Backup and Restore in Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/Vista."
Should I use something else or use ERUNT anyway?

Hi,

yes, Erunt should be Windows 7 compatible from version 1.1j upwards. Please see the frequently asked question for Erunt though: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/faq.htm

There was only one antivirus object listed by wbemtest. Interestingly, the properties showed it is related to ZoneAlarm, and not Symantec. I have Norton 360 running, so I am wondering why it isn't listed as well. I can reinstall Norton, so I'm guessing there is no danger that deleting the only antivirus object properties. Let's see how that goes.

Hi,

yes I did see that Norton did not register in the WMI. Let me know if the SecurityCenter will notify you that you are unprotected after removing ZoneAlarm.

I backed up the registry with Erunt and tried to delete the antivirus object found by WBEMTEST by I was denied access ("0x80041003 (WBEM_E_ACCESS_DENIED)"; see attachment) so I couldn't remove it. From what I can tell this has something to do with namespace security. How do I fix this?

Nevermind the wbemtest permissions. I forgot to turn off UAC again. I deleted the orphaned ZoneAlarm object.

Eventhough the Norton 360 control panel shows everything is running when I opened the Action Center and it reported the following:
Spyware etc:
Windosws Defender and Norton Security Suite both report that they are turned off.
Virus Protection:
Norton Security Suite reports that it is turned off.
Network Firewall:
Windosws Firewall and Norton Security Suite both report that they are turned off.
I rebooted and the action now reports that the spyware, antivirus & firewall protections are running.
