Internal Sony DVD RW AWQ170A. Drive will read and play dvds and cds but will not burn either one. This is also happening with an external Asus drive.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled hardware and software video/music programs and have tried several different disc brands.
I have looked for upper and lower filters in regedit to delete but found none.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Have you taken a look in Event Viewer...for errors which might enlighten...concerning functionality of the drive or your burn program...or key services which may be needed for burning?

How To Use Event Viewer - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/

..."won't burn"...what are the error messages given by the burn program?

Thank you for your responses. I was not aware of an event log. When going thru it, I noticed some items that may apply (I'm not sure what any of this means):

System Errors (most recent listed first):

• An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom1 during a paging operation.

• The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service failed to start due to the following error:
• The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

• Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service to connect.

• The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block

• The device, \Device\CdRom2, has a bad block

• Intel® 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection Link has been disconnected.

• The flush and hold operation for volume C: was aborted because of low available system memory.

• The server {7160A13D-73DA-4CEA-95B9-37356478588A} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

When I saw bad block I investigated and did a disc check - that came out "clean". I used a disc cleaner on both drives. Didn't help.
DriverScanner says there are no outdated drivers on the system.

System Information:
Windows XP Professional
Intel G965 (updated 5/6/2010) MAX 8 GB DDR2 1066 Mhz Motherboard Model: Dg965ss
Intel XD E6300 1.86 GB Dual Core Processor 4 MB 1066
4 GB DDR2 533 Mhz Memory PC 4200 (RAM)
Sony 18x DVD+RW/-RW CD ROM AWQ170-A
Intel Audio Studio Version 2.0.0131
Board Model DG965SS, Board Version AAD41678-308
ATI VisionTek TV Wonder HD 600 900189 PCI-Express x1 Interface
Sound Card SigmaTel Audio

One message from Roxio (I also use Nero) says disc is not proper media for recording.
I've tried several brands of discs.
Perhaps one of the above messages will give you a clue, otherwise I think I have 2 bad burners.

Thanks very much!

It appears that you have both Roxio and Nero installed.
They may be conflicting with each other
Uninstall one of them

Of the two I prefer Nero as to me Roxio is a resource hog
In the beginning there was the command line.

• An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom1 during a paging operation.

Problem with CDRom 1, probably inability to read.

The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Manages CD burn process...if this isn't working properly, you will not be able to burn successfully.

• Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service to connect.

Related to IMAPI error, status report.

• The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block

A bad block on an optical drive...indicates inability to read an inserted disc. Could be disc, lens, drive.

• The device, \Device\CdRom2, has a bad block

Already mentioned...how many optical drives on this system? Three are mentioned with errors.

• Intel® 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection Link has been disconnected.

Self-explanatory, problem with NIC. Any apparent connection problems?

• The flush and hold operation for volume C: was aborted because of low available system memory.

How much RAM installed? Appears to be a problem with backup software/process. Are you using NTBackup? Related service in XP: Volume Shadow Copy.

You guys are utterly amazing! I downloaded IMG, uninstalled Roxio and have successfully burned CDs and DVDs on both internal (D) and external (E) drives! One difficulty remains on the E drive: it will play back the video on ATI but Windows Media won't open. Small problem - will work on it (D drives works perfectly with WMP).

Here's my filter info from IMG: If you see something I need to do, please let me know. Thanks so very very much!!

The filters function like rootkits, all commands to the optical drives go thru them, the imapi and redbook are the native ones in windows.

I would remove the gear and sonic ones, especially Drag-to-Disc, packet writting software causes all kinds of problems in windows.

When you get too many filters and they get corrupt you get a game of chinese whispers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_whispers

Use Imgburn to remove them.
