My wife has a Compaq Presario V5000 laptop that we nicknamed the turtle because it is so slow. Can you walk us through the steps to clean it up and remove any harmful programs. It has an AMD Sempron Mobile processor and is on Windows XP Home. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Excellent links, Louis.

Can we see some system specs, chris.gatti?

Cleaning your computer, disabling unnecessary startup programs, and removing malware will help to a degree....but slow hardware is slow hardware.

Download Speccy and post a screenshot of the Summary if you don't know your full system specs.

Well, like I said...slow hardware is slow hardware.

But did you look at those links Louis posted? They will help to a degree...but it's still going to be pretty slow.

I would clean temp files, scan for malware, disable unnecessary startups, disable fancy graphics, and blow the dust out of the case with a can of compressed air.

If you have any questions as to how to do any of that, let me know and I will explain as necessary.
